I have 2 x Win 2003 Standard Edition DCs. I was thinking of prepping it using the following commands on the PDC:

adprep /forestprep

adprep /domainprep

adprep /domainprep /gprep

adprep /rodcprep

Question is, can I go from 2003 32-bit to a 64-bit of 2008 R2 (R2 installed on a seperate server and then DCPROMO'd), or does it need to remain 32-bit throughout everything?

The thing you need to watch is what version of adprep you use.

On the 64bit 2008r2 disk there is "adprep" and "adprep32"...

you need to run adprep32 from the 2008r2 disk on your existing 2003 DC

If I use adprep32 on 2003 from the 2008 R2 cd, does this mean 2008 R2 can be DCPROMO'd into an environment whereby both 2003 DCs aren't 64-bit?

yes the schema extensions itself does not target a specific processor, you just need to run the correct version of adprep depending on which os you run it from,

Yes, I am running like this at the moment. I do however intend to upgrade all DCs to 2008r2 64bit

Just doing this now myself to integrate my new 2008 R2 DC before planning on retiring a 2003 DC and upgrading/reinstalling my other to 2008 R2 as well.

All the instructions I read before this said to get the 32 bit version of adprep I had to download a 32 bit 2008 trial obviously all MS have for download now is 64 bit 2008 R2.

Perfect.

In case there is any doubt there is indeed an adprep32.exe on the 2008r2 DVD which works fine as I used it just the other day on a 2003 box. As there was no 32 bit version of r2 they had to include it on the x64 DVD which is good.
