Backup transfer times

Hi

 

Just looking for some advice on backups, 1 of our backups is of the Homedirs and Profiles, which is roughyly 240GB in size just using NTBackup to a Server and the end of a fibre run with a cat5 1gb connection.

 

The backup is taking over a day to complete, this seems extremly slow , how does this compare to anyone elses backup.

 

Can anyone recomend an alernate setup or possibly and better peice of software/soloution.

 

Any advice would be much appreciated

We back up 180GB of data from one server to another via a 1GB connection, and it takes 9 hours.

 

So, it is a bit slow. What specs are the servers? (ie. RAID disks etc...?) Is the backup being ran at the same time as people using the server? Have you got any CPU usage/Memory usage etc... details to go with the backups?

Have you looked into software that can reduce back up times and reduce storage? ie a file archiver or storage archiver at all?

Test your throughput with robocopy - say a few multiple-gig files to get an idea of how fast you can push the link and report back.

 

Also, make sure you're not using PCI slots for your nics.

Maybe do your full backup on a weekend and a seperate daily icrimental one at night:o asuming you have the storage space on your backup device. I us NT Backup in this fashion and with around 200gb of data it takes around 6-7 hours for the full back up using 1gb cat 5 connection to the NAS box. I'll have to check for the daily one.

Using R1Soft CDP my backup window is about 30 minutes in total.

 

I do a backup at lunchtime and in the evening.

Results copying 1 file using robocopy, not sure how that translates!!!!

Server spec is a Dell 2950 server raid 5 10K SCSI HDD's (Source) to and old dell server with 2x1.5Tb 10K Drives which are SATA no raid!(destanation)

830GB in around 10 hours, although this has been slowed somewhat by server 2008 R2 having to use VSS with backup exec. Previously it was around 800GB in 7 hours.

 

That's D2D, to tape is 830GB in 6 hours from the D2D store.

Ah! NTBackup, just spotted that.

 

It's awful, there are some registry tweaks that help but only a little.

Last monthly backup: Over 400 Gb from 6 servers in 14.5 hours using Symantec Backup Exec over locally switched [all servers in the same server room] 1 Gb backbone.

Yeh NTBackup is just a cut down version of backupexec

 

I found adding 3gb of Ram to our backup server shaved a few hours off our backup. We use Backupexec here and can do 200gb in 10hrs.
