Edu-IT Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Who has had their connection upgraded then? Shame we're only going from 10MB to 20MB though, I see Norfolk got 100MB. Are they replacing the routers too?
6Foot2 Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 We have a theoretical 100 mb connection [shared between 2 other schools] I say 'theoretical' because it has never seemed to live up to the promise.
Kitkatninja Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Who has had their connection upgraded then? We're in the process, BT came in last week to splice fibre for another circuit. Shame we're only going from 10MB to 20MB though. I believe that the line is capable of 100mb, but it will be capped at 20mb. Are they replacing the routers too? We had our replaced a few months ago from a 1u 2900 series (I believe) to a 2u 2800 series one. -Ken
GrumbleDook Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 It varies from LA to LA depending on what funding they had available. Shire counties where given some additional grants the other year and that is allowing for some significant investment, but some were already playing catch up. Anyone going to a 20 meg line is pretty much going to be on a WES100 circuit ... but to keep running costs reasonable we have requested it capped in Northants ... other LAs vary as already mentioned. The grant for investment is paying for setup costs, not the annual costs (which will go up!) A number of schools had end of life routers (and no longer supported by Cisco) which had to be replaced, some routers are being upgraded to deal with the higher bandwidth connections.
Edu-IT Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 We're currently on a WES10. I think our router is end of life so can probably look forward to a new one of those.
Ex-MGSTech Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Kent do 10Mbit free to all kent schools then 20-100 in chunks. If your schools "feeds" another locally you get whats left over from a 100Mb connection We have 20Mbit and I see speeds of around 14Mb download and 6-7 upload http://www.pingtest.net/result/5278206.png [EDIT] Sorry just noticed I've crashed a EMBC section sorry!

Are they replacing the routers too? The whole of the Norfolk infrastructure got upgraded. We are waiting for the 100MB to be enabled, which it might or might not be in the future as they reckon few of the schools have hit the limit for the switch to be flipped.
AIT Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Applies to Nottinghamshire. I have been speaking to the necessary people. I have heard that it’s going out to tender in January so EMBC may no longer be EMBC. However on the good news they will hopefully be pushing out 100mb trial lines in the early half of next year. As our 10mb line simply is not quick enough for 1500 users and 800 machines.
GrumbleDook Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 To reassure Northants members ... EMBC is still continuing. 2
Edu-IT Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Anyone else had their routers replaced? Why new toys are they giving us?
Edu-IT Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Ours is being done next week and I'm just wondering what to expect, that's all. Partly for the fact that the cabinet it's going in to might have to be reshuffled.

Edu-IT Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 what school are you at? and more importantly what speed are you going to? 20 Meg, Leicestershire school.
AIT Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 20 Meg, Leicestershire school. Jealous… 1000 kids and were only on 10mb… how did you find out about your upgrade?
Edu-IT Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 The LA contacted us well before Christmas. It's been on the cards for ages. 1
