new computer

Anyone recommend me a computer? Good spec but not gaming quality. What OS would you use for home use - vista or windows 7? Thanks!

Why not build your own. I would think Simon could get you the bits at a good price, it would be fun to build and cool to be able to tell people you had built it yourself. I'd go for Windows 7 on the basis that you will need to get to grips with it at sometime. That was my rationale in getting Vista on my laptop.

Been there done that:) This is a computer for a friend rather recommend a 'branded' one than homebuilt.

Without knowing their price range, I'd see what Dull had on offer with Xmas approaching.

Certainly Windows 7 - I'd spend between £400-500 for a "good spec"

I'm fond of the Dell Vostro small business line, specifically because you get a good spec that isn't focused on gaming performance. The warranty is also NBD onsite without breaking the bank, because you don't pay for all the 'fluffy' support you get with the normal home warranty.

 

I'd echo the Windows 7 sentiment too.

If your friend is on a budget Tesco Direct often have some decent machines. The drawback is that they fall under the Windows 7 upgrade offer instead of coming pre-installed. They run pretty swiftly after you take all the bundled rubbish off. They were doing delivery to your local store which I found very convenient compared to the 130 mile round trip I had to do last weekend to my local UKMail depot to pick up a Dell laptop as I was out when they tried to deliver.

 

I like the Dell computers but have had such bad experiences with them lately. Orders cancelled without informing me. Very long delivery times and account managers who don’t seem to care.
