Wow, sounds like a great place to live! Free porn... erm I mean internet and all the speeding you can cram in whilst you have your eyesight left!! But seriously, its an interesting idea, I just wonder how sustainable it will be long term and how upgradeable it would be if and when speeds increase substantially.

INeedAUsername Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Birmingham city are doing something very similiar; the start of this is to get point to point access for homes within thier wifi range for the laptops for students scheme They are due to come to us to install some antennaes for the surrounding homes, speaking with their IT man, they are planning to have the whole of Birmingham covered, every building including high rise flats. The cost will be funded by government and private firms but have the option of using this to browse the net for a pay as you go fee in the very near future. The only downside to this is this is not going to get me covered; i live outside Birmingham

Some VOD traffic is used over torrent ports so I would very much doubt it..... Will be interesting to find out how it will be managed - specially with the likes of VOIP and other types of IP traffic....

Went live yesterday. You get two hours free and has to be used within 24 hours. Knowing SBC it will all go tits up. Oh, and a third of the setup costs its tax payers money!

The news article says that the council has a 35% share in the company and the company expects to make money. It seems likely that they will make money so they should get back their initial investment. Assuming that they do make money then this seems financially like a good idea.

So the taxpayer stumps up the collateral to get the venture going then sees no return on the profits! Nice Can I get me a slice of that pie? Suppose its what the banks do already so who are we to argue....

There seems to be 2 sides - 1 saying 'there's no proof it isn't harmful!!! It must be evil!' and the other saying 'well, yes research is ongoing but current advice is that everything is fine'. The prior argument is ridiculous, and the latter is what everyone who installs wireless ends up coming to say - as that is currently the truth. But as usual, knee-jerk reactionary people think 'something new!! must be evil!!!'.

Yesterday we had a reasoned report saying that people with depression are often big users of the internet. It explicitly said that they didn't know whether people got depressed because they use the internet or if depressed people were drawn to the web. Metro headline pretty much said "we're all doomed if we go on the web" Today we have Toyota. There's a problem with the accelerator on some Toyota cars. So far there are just 26 reported problems in Europe and, as far as I can see, none has been serious. Reading some of the reports, you'd think that every Japanese car was about to run amok and attack us all!

Nice Surely if the council own 35% of the company, they will receive money back which will then go back to help the residents (hopefully, I know, I know) so it is an investment that would be better than having money sitting in Iceland (the country not in a load of freezers). Also do we know the terms of the council money? Is it a loan, grant or an investment?
