Hi all,

I have a few questions! First thanks to everyone who has helped me suss out RM been a great help!

1. I need to deploy a few icons to students desktops (its just a web link for a program called BKSB) whats the best way to do this? I would have thought batch file but how do i assign a batch file to the student machines through RM manager or is there a better way?

2. I need to keep the firewall on but allow remote desktop to work, Where should i add these settings in.

Thanks all.

Hi

If I was you, I would deliver shortcuts via the Start > All Programs method - things start to get messy when you add shortcuts to the desktop especially when staff see its possible they will want all sorts adding.

Via the Management console the very top tree is called Configuration Settings. If you then choose:

Global Workstation Settings > Windows Firewall

Then you can enable the firewall as well as add the necessary exceptions to allow remote desktop to work. I must admit a lot of people have created a package for something like TightVNC and find this works much better than Remote Desktop.

Another tip I can offer is there's a bit more work to creating internet shortcuts. Using a standard shortcut doesn't work with RM. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer Right click iexplore.exe and create a shortcut to your desktop.

Right click this shortcut and choose properties. In the Target path it should read:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Update this to:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.logistixonline.com/

Apply settings then rename the shortcut. Now copy/move this shortcut on your server to:

\RMDelivery\Group Resources\Shortcut Bank

Within the RMMC navigate to Resources > Program Sets. Create a new folder or right click and choose Properties on an existing one. Select the Shortcuts tab, then at the top right change the source from 'Application Packages' to 'Shortcut Bank'. Add your shortcut then click OK.

Now right click the folder again and choose 'Redeliver Program Set'. All machines will require a reboot to receive the new shortcut. Why this is the case I am not 100% sure as using a native AD Folder Redirection, shortcuts appear instantly when copying/pasting them into the right place on the server for both Desktop and Start Menu.
