Want software to show me whos currently logged in.

Hi,

 

Does anyone know of a program that can tell me details of who is logged in and to which machines on the network?

 

I know this sort of info can be gotten from the event logs, but there must be a nicer, more elegant way of finding this stuff out than searching through reams of event log data, or checking the open sessions/files on the server.

 

I did once write a test program that used WMI to get the username from each machine across the network, but it was so slow it was painful (especially when it came across a machine that was turned off, and so would wait for a time-out before moving on to the next).

Try PsLoggedOn from the PsTools suite available from SysInternals. It will tell you who is logged on to a particular workstation. You'll have to script the rest though.

You could use ABTutor control which I admit is a little overkill but well worth the money (£150) for the rest of it's features. It lists all computers with installed client and who is logged onto them.

Well you can go to computer management from the admin tools folder and then into sessions. This will show who's connected and the various info there will let you decide who is active and who's juts left themselves logged on.

I know of "locate user" but this only searches for a username on a network, not able to show whos logged on?

Ouch. Thanks for pointing that one out. It's a big shame, PsTools are priceless IMHO. I generally use them attached to the likes of VNCNeighbourhood or AngryZiber IP Scanner. Is that within the license I wonder?

I don't see anywhere in the EULA for pstools that you can't script them.

not an ideal situation but this sort of works:

have the DC's log to a centralised syslog server

search the logs for logon time.

Like I say it sort-of works, but we don't use it for that as we are a Citrix school and Citrix shows us who's logged on.

Citrix also lets us view screen shots, and allows us to kick people we don't like which is fun for friday afternoons

I'm just wondering if there were other versions of the eula during the transition to microsoft and it's now been updated again?

Just that it looks like it does everything NetSupport does but for £150, I assume NetSupport costs far more.

Re: AB Tutor Control... We've been using it here for 6 months and it's a gem - I think the last quote I got for NetSupport was circa £5k. I bought AB Tutor Control 3 consoles and unlimited clients and all future maintenance for less than £400.

Best bargain I've had in software since I started in the Education field 6 years ago. Oh, and it works very well too!

The quickest and cheapest is to download GPInventory from MS - it does users and will also show details of all your kit (thanks to whoever it was on Edugeek who told me about it).

 

Also you can try LimitLogon (also MS) - which can produce reports of logged on users and restrict their number of logins.

This doesnt give an easy way to see all the user at any given moment does it?

If you have the old NT 4.0 resource kit tools CD there is a utility with a Gui called NETWATCH.EXE that lists logged on users by client/server and open files, we still use it here for quick checks also MST gives better functionality especially if you have it configured to use VNC.

I should have known SysInternals would have a tool for this sort of thing.

 

AB Tutor Control looks very interesting as well, similar to SynchronEyes, but better. The Classroom Layout feature looks to be exactly what I'm after, although it does need a small client installed on all the desktop machines, but I can live with that.

Not sure which one you're asking about - but Limitlogon comes with a litle reporting tool - not elegant, but it does work. GPInventory has to do a sweep of PCs to have a look - takes about 60 seconds on our network (of about 400). I've no doubt there are better tools - but these are free.
