do you mean simsprem.bat?

 

You can find it inside your sims setup directory

That's the one and we don't have it on the sims server. We Have a problem printing. They have full control to local sims folder but it don't work. Add user to local admin group works. It uses a part of the old novat for printing reports and timetables.

ok silly question, I have made the bat file, when i run it i get this

Usage simsperm [domain]\ or simsperm [domain]\"

 

I have tried putting in the our domain and user group but it doesnt appear to run.

This is probably a stuipd reply, but it has happend in the past and it has stopped it working.

 

Are you using the FQDN or the Net Bios Name?

 

it should be

 

domain\username rather then what some people do and domain.internal\username

 

worth an ask just incase

why not just use active directory to give the permissions out rather than a batch file?

 

i believe it also sets permissions on some reg keys as well possibly why it works as admin

Syntax should be SIMSPerm.bat domainname\groupname

 

Don't mess around editing the batch file itself - run it with the switch.

We have a few computers that are shared between a few members of staff

 

do i have to run sims perm for each member of staff?

You run it per computer as a startup script. this may help - Overview of Logon, Logoff, Startup, and Shutdown Scripts in Windows 2000

This file is useless if you have an RM network btw, as all group names in the RM system are preceeded by RM (and a blank space) and when run the file will only accept string input up to the first space!! So ours (RM Teaching Staff) doesn't work

Our Users are limited users so it would not work?? as the simsperm would need to be run as an admin or have i got this wrong?

SIMSPerm is to be run after install of the SIMS program. It needs to be done with admin rights as its changing permissions on folders

If you have already installed sims on the network run it as a start-up script and it will let non administrators update sims etc

Ok, I think this thread is a little confusing.

 

The SIMSPerm.bat file is, as Jamo says, supposed to be run after SIMS is installed on a machine, by someone with local admin rights.

 

You run it on a command prompt like so:

 

simsperm.bat SCH4290\Staff

 

That would set the permissions correctly for the group 'Staff' on our domain.

 

It doesn't need running on startup/login, or by end users.

Actually I gave up with simsperm.bat. Sometimes something went wron and I had to go back to the machine to upgrade it. most of the time I forgot about it when I put a new SIMS machine in. Those problems went away when I addedd all the security setting to a GPO.

You would do if you have sims already installed out on the system. It would save visiting every machine. Thats what i am trying to get across.

I think adding a Group Policy its a easier solution. No step to forget. Also, not sure if it works with Windows 7.

Also worth mentioning that it won't work if you have installed the SIMS client application to a directory other than it's default one - "C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net"

 

I generally use a GPO to deploy another batch file which calls "SIMSPerm.bat domain/group" as a startup (not login) script, this way it runs under the system account and just works.

(Be careful to point it at the UNC path ie "\\servername\sims" etc and not at a mapped drive - system accounts won't map drives).

 

@ Matt40k, I haven't tried on Win7 yet but might get a chance early this week as I'm going to a school where they have a couple of new W7 machines which they want SIMS on - If I find out I'll update this post.
