Heading into the big world and moving in with a friend and some randoms into student accommodation.

I have few expensive items like a macbook pro, iphone, speakers etc.

Can someone recommend a contents insurance company? (I don't want to put it on my parents insurance)

Many Thanks

Look at Endsleigh, they did very good policies when I lived in a shared house a while back. Whatever you do make sure the insurance company know it is a shared house because you could find your cover is void if you take out 'normal' contents insurance as most companies have different policies for shared houses. Unfortunitely these are more expensive owing to the higher risk, but it's important to make sure you have the right cover. :)

Just FYI - LV's contents insurance in my house also covers my son's possessions if they are in his locked room at Uni - not out and about, obviously

When I was at uni endsleigh did the best deal on student posessions insurance that also covered all your stuff when you took it out as well

Endsleigh are very cheap when you are a student but the price shot up for me after graduating as the policies are discounted through negotiation with the NUS. If you're in a trade union they may have a deal worked out with an insurer - when I was in UNISON I got some good deals from UIA.

Bear in mind that if you choose to pay a monthly premium instead of an up-front fee you probably won't be paying the insurance company directly, you'll be paying a loan company. This got on my nerves as the loan company sent me letters advertising "borrow £100 'till payday!" and, obviously, they charged interest, so I switched to a different company and paid up-front this time.

Never had that with 3 different companies. A bit odd!

Must say i've never had that either. I know that what usually happens is that the company loans you the money then you pay it back in installments with extra interest but i've always paid the insurance company directly.

Never taken out a load to pay monthly premiums, or simply never had junk mail from the loans company?

Never taken out a loan, lol. The ranglings behind insurance should be handled by the insurer - not you. You don't deal with the loan company, so why should they be sending you anything. I have only ever paid monthly premiums for insurance too (I rarely have a few hundred quid to splash on anything).

Whenever you look at things like insurance it's worth seeing if you can get an existing customer type of discount from a company you're already using for something else, eg. I got a discount on my contents insurance by going through my bank, AA insurance is cheaper if you're an AA member etc. etc.

It's worth taking advantage of such things imo.

Have a look at Martin Lewis (I think) website apparently someone actually got paid £67'ish pounds for taking out insurance after offers and cashbacks.
