Random Question about my Car!!

Hi Guys,

 

Your all always really helpful with computers so I thought I may test you all to the next level! "hehe" I have a Peugeot 206 SW 1.4 HDI; does anybody know what the average mileage should be for having the cam belt changed on it? Its got a full service history; just I have had experience of garage people telling me I need jobs doing in the past when the jobs didn't actually need doing.

replace every 55k to 60k

What does the handbook say? If you haven't got it, try looking in your local library for the Haines book; that will tell you. Failing that, about what ^he says.

60k should be ok with it being a diesel. Be aware also that when manufacturers build a new engine they dont really seem to know a lot of the time - i had an astra which originally came out saying every 70k and they've brought it down 10k 3 times and now it's every 40k, because theyre forever snapping.

 

The other thing to do is ring Pug, don't tell them your mileage so you know they aren't just ripping u off and ask them when it needs doing on that car they'll look it up if they dont know.

I'd go for 60K as that is quite common on them, TBH with something as "valuable" as those to the car for the couple of hundred quid it would cost you VS the potential of a written off engine if its done more often it won't kill

Get yourself a Haynes manual for your car... will save you alot of hassle as it lists all the parts that get worn by milage... what to check... and also how to do most bits yourself with clear indicators on difficulty (saving on garage bills)

We have the Haynes manual and it actually doesn't give a milage for the cam belt replacement - it just says 'keep an eye on it and check for wear'

Odd.... well then do just that check it for wear and tear and see if it looks like it needs changing

Be careful with the Haynes - if you have a sound mechanical knowledge you're ok but dont go too far into it if you're not that way inclined - in the Haynes mini manual it says the dizzie cam (and so rotor) goes the oposite way to which it does (i think it goes clockwise but it states anticlockwise) and it also has the wrong cam information in one of them in relation to the dizzie advance.

They're great in theory but if you're working on a car you're relying upon and doing a tricky job if you get stuck you're up the creek. What turned into a simple job of drilling and tapping a dizzie for the threads for the cap turned into 2 days of random confusion. Until i thought what if haynes is wrong, which is something i'd not considered before! Luckily it didnt matter to me because its a second car, so it just stayed there. But if i'd of been on the bus to work i'd of had something to say to Haynes.... sorry for hijacking the thread, a nice little Haynes rant there!

I had the exact same car and I was told by the dealer it was every 60k miles. push it any further and your asking for trouble lol.

 

I can't say how much this would cost to have done, as I got managed to park it up the rear of a saab on the motorway lol

I called up peugeot 206 to ask them, and all I wanted was an answer over the phone, and they didn't tell me, they just said book it in for a £25 diagnostics. That was Perry's Peugeot in Colne/Nelson.

well if you do get the work done get the "cam belt KIT" not just the cam belt last thing you want is a fooked car.

 

the norm is 60k diesel

and about 30/35K on Petrol

Its recomended to be changed at 60K.
