Already have a server available to run the software and would like reasonable quality cameras (good enough to id people if needed), motion activated, PoE would be nice but not essential. Cameras would be ceiling or wall mounted.

We've just got an Acti 1231 camera and have been pretty impressed with it. It comes with some software that should do what you want, although I haven't actually tried the software, as we're using it for time lapse recording, so use a different app.

 

It produces up to 1280 x 1024 res images, so pretty clear, supports POE, and wasn't a bad price.

As steveg said, the ACTi cameras are pretty impressive for the money. Some really well priced mega-pixel quality cameras with quality that we're happy with.

 

We bought our cameras from Phil @ use-ip.co.uk and have had several with no complaints (best spending the extra on their better ranges, but I suppose that is the same for any brand of products).

 

We use icode's icatcher with these cameras, which is the cheapest commercial software we could find with the features we needed, and serves the purpose. There are of course better vendors out there (such as milestone) so you need to assess your budget; we only went for icatcher because we were (and still are) on tight budgets, but it does the job! In recall a post here about a fairly good free alternative for recording software - maybe do a search, as it seemed pretty decent from the screenshots.

I've used a firm called Y3K CCTV - CCTV | CCTV Cameras, CCTV Monitors, CCTV DVRs, CCTV Systems and get most of my CCTV stuff from them and have been very impressed with them and provide good advice and kit, maybe worth giving them a call to discuss your needs

ACTi also provide their CCTV recording software on a CD in the box with every new camera. As mentioned above, there are better Professional CCTV software solutions available if you need to mix & match IP camera brands - but Free is a good place to start:)

We did ours in house with some 3rd party software from Blueirissoftware Blue Iris - Home. The creator gives very good support and we bought 6 zavio D510 dome cameras POE and POE converters and the pc it runs on is a dell 755, plus we have put another 3 cameras on this.

 

It depends how much you want to spend.

Mobotix do make fantastic IP cameras.

 

Often referred to as having the computer in the camera, they have a greater choice of settings and configuration options than probably any other camera.

 

Their latest models Q24 and D24 are really pushing the performance envelope with their latest in-camera processing being able to deliver 3 megapixel images at full frame rate (25 images per second).

 

A couple of major benefits with Mobotix; all the software you'll need is provided 'in the box'; and the camera can be configured to write its video to any drive you choose e.g. a pre-existing network drive, or specially added NAS.

 

Their cameras are relatively top-end price-wise, but you do get what you pay for in terms of performance, image quality, and a mature/developed whole IPCCTV camera and software solution.
