OllieC Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Micro rant+lack of soldering ability.... Thought I'd finally move onto repairing the second of my eMacs. Knew the problem was capacitor related and had replacement capacitors for a while... Open it up to find: http://olliez0r.com/skitch/emac1-20090926-001501.jpg http://olliez0r.com/skitch/emac2-20090926-001647.jpg 4 hours later, 8 out of 9 replaced and two burnt fingertips. Can't get the last one in... leg snapped off the old one in the hole and there isn't enough to grip it at the bottom and I can't push it from the top. Plus I have no solder sucker... argh. If this doesn't work when I finally get that capacitor back in and the entire thing back together then sparks will fly (from me, not the eMac). xD Anyone else tried this kind of repair with one of these before or am I as mad as I look?

OllieC Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Is there any point, eMacs had their days yonks ago! If it was any less powerful then I'd probably not bother but they're not too bad... by G4 specs anyway. 1.25ghz, 1gb, 80gb, superdrive... I can find a use for a Mac of that spec.

synaesthesia Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I do it a lot more now than I used to: started off like yourself armed with pliers, soldering iron and burned fingers but invested in a sucker & some braid and the job's so much easier Replaced all the capacitors on my sound card a while ago to improve the quality, not something I'd want to do without a huge amount of patience and the right tools Go grab a sucker on ebay, can get them for 99p Especially useful if anyone asks you desperately to repair their Dell Optiplex

And i just left it off for a few weeks while plugged in but with no power to the plug so it's earthed beforehand. Should've been enough time for any residual charge to drain... still wouldn't liek to fiddle with the CRT though, lol.

Just thought I'd post an update.... with a lot of help and hammering with a needle (not the best idea probably) we got through the clogged up hole and I present to you....
