Duke Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I haven't upgraded yet but the more I read the changelog the more awesome it looks! iSCSI performance improvements sound really good, even if NFS does look like the better protocol for virtualisation Quotas will make a lot of people happy, even if it's not quite at the Windows FSRM level yet Triple parity RAID is cool now disks are so cheap, are we calling this RAID-TP? Enable/disable Logzilla for each share - does this work on-the-fly and as such can be used for easy performance testing? Enhanced MMC support - Woo, my NetApp box kind of did this but it was always a pain. Is the S7000 simply a case of Computer Management > Connect to another computer > S7000 hostname? Duke Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I had a quick glance over that and it all sounds good. I must admit the Sun blogs are definitely better than what most companies have, Brendan Gregg's is like an S7000 PR/promo blog just because it makes everything look so good!

john Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I already had Q2.5, basically it made my box, under "load" (thats 150 students hitting save from all over the campus etc), kernal panic and reboot, nice at the end of lessons where a few mins before the end of the lesson when teachers traditionally tell you to save before logging off, packing your bags etc it just went AARGH and restarted and thus due to time, kids click happy etc they lost work (note thats not the SAN its kids and no time to wait for it to come back up etc), so queue not happy teachers and Management as all work, shared areas, finance, profiles, documents etc are on the SAN. Its been escalated to top guys in Sun as a bug that needs fixing, so I cannot use the new one, had to roll back to the previous version (which was easy done using the one button to roll back ) As I hadn't applied the deferred updates to update the system for the Quotas etc. 1

kmount Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 John is definitely a special one To clarify though, the issue has been escalated up throughout the teams and we're expecting some feedback very soon. We have several customers already up on Q3 without any problems, even before the recommendation (amended release notes) for Q2.5 came around but I do understand the hesitations folks are having. (It is good to know the rollback works smoothly!) I would award John a certificate for finding the weirdest problems known to man... (But lunch on him will do instead).

When you bring me my Sun Rays and associated goodies in the future mate for me to demo to my SLT etc I am sure lunch on me at the local tavern can be very much arranged As for the certificate, it needs a nice frame and mount to compliment my BCS one that is on the office wall please
john Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I've had an update from Sun, its been found as a bug in Open Solaris and fixed in that so now time for them to work on a fix for it in the S7000 as its not just pure open solaris. I thinks I need that certificate saying Official Bug Finder in Open Solaris 1

Chris Yes, but according to the release notes "Clustered systems must be upgraded to 2009.Q2.5.0 or later before upgrading to 2009.Q3.1.0. " Just something to be aware of. Rick
Duke Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Yep, I grabbed Q2.5.0 when I planned to go to Q3 so should be okay. I'll give it another week for everyone else to try out Q3.1.0 then upgrade if there aren't any issues, looks like the new features are all good.
john Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Upgraded to Q3.1.0 last night and today was a good day No complains, no crashes, no drop outs nothing wrong at all Monday will be another good test day (busy ICT Teaching day) as will this weekend as its full backup day so ive got 16% of 4TB to backup in the next 48hrs
