Branding the Windows GINA

I was looking at branding the Windows Logon GINA - like the new version of karoshi did to display a logo. Does anybody know how to do this?

Several websites with the information but unless you do it the correct way you are breaking the law.

Not the law, the EULA for Windows. Which makes your licences explode. Presuming you feel EULA's are legal.

You can probably replace the MS GINA. Novell, Citrix have their own GINA's and I'm sure I've seen some OSS ones for unix integration. I think the EULA refers to rebranding the MS GINA.

does anyone know how and/or have the files to take the logon GINA from Windows Vista and put it on XP? Or build a similar one. This would be good for staff laptops as you do not need to reenter the username.

Can't you just set your gpo for the laptops to not wipe out the last logged on user?

As far as I know, Vista no longer uses the GINA modal that was empoyed in Windows 2000/XP/2003 - So I don think it will be compatible with XP

Apparently:

 

"Winlogin (GINA) is being rewritten for Windows Vista to reduce number of necessary processes and components loaded. The new GINA will not be replaceable. A new Credential Provider Model will be used for extensibility. New mechanisms will also be provided to support existing functionality. A new Eventing and Stacking, and Chaining model will be provided."

I've just replaced the windows XP banner on my PC (XP classic logon not the welcome screen.

 

I used a program called reshack to edit the MSGINA.DLL file.

 

Open the MSGINA.DLL file and click bitmap from the list. Select the item you want to edit, right click and save the bmp image. Edit it and select replace bmp from the same menu.

 

Now when the user logs on they see my logo, instead of the XP logo.

 

Brief instructions but the program is self explanatory.

I think this method might breach the EULA for XP...

Though you can get the source code for the MSGINA from Microsoft somewhere - if you know C++ you can use that to compile your own GINA file..

Unfortunately I dont know C++....

That's correct Gatt, as I explained, you can't legally do the above because there are clauses in the EULA that prevent you from modifying MS code.
