Anyone tried to get in contact with Sky tech support (my Sky+ box has stopped playing ball!). Just tried at 11:30pm and get told they are very busy and cut me off. Am I in for the long haul in trying to get in contact with them oris there a 'good'time to call?

Try and get through to the Scottish office, and not the Indian call centre.

I used to call the BSkyB Head Office down in London, and ask to be transferred to the complaints dept - this always went to Scotland. However they've wise to this!

My Dad used to ask for Welsh speaker if he got to India, and they'd transfer him to the UK, and then act surprised when they spoke Welsh to him!

What make of box do you have?

Its an Amstrad. Turned it off last night and back on this morning and its back to being OK (at the moment). Problem was it had lost signal from tuner/input 1, swapped the cables and still the same so I know its not the dish or leads and the box in the other room works fine. After a little googling this morning I found that it seems to be a common problem and is by all accounts related to the hard disk (I know it seems strange but thats from them who apparently know). Will just wait and see if its happens again. It is slower on the menus than our other box (don't think thats an Amstrad off hand) seems to wait ages before showing whats been recorded or even hangs for a few seconds so not looking good.

I can't find the post on DigitalSpy but Amstrad boxes are cack.

When I got one installed I found loads of stuff about how bad they were so I found the above mentioned post and wrote to someone at Sky.

They contacted me in less than a week and arranged for someone to come out and swap it for a brand new Pace one...

Amstrads firmware is awful and depending on batch has lots of problems.

Must agree, Amstrad sky boxes are just best used as paperweights, we had a couple and they were crud so best just chuck it and get a new one :)

With sky boxes - switching them off, switch back on, leave for a couple of minutes and then use usually fixes problems. If we get very heavy rain, we invariably have to do this to reset the box. (not amstrad)

Our old box had an HDD failure. We went through about a month of strange freezes and hangs until it flatly refused to do anything at all. The cost of replacing the HDD was such that we replaced the whole box.

You may do better to talk to a local independent supplier about the problems. I had guessed HDD failure myself with our box and the symptoms were so like those of a dieing PC. However they were able to confirm it to me (free of charge) and ultimately did me a very good deal on the replacement box... and told me the engineers codes and how to get it setup without an engineers visit. :)

The access to the engineer/setup menu is well documented on the internet and you can change your hard drive and transfer your recordings yourself using the copy+ program.
