Samlearning.com So Slowwww (Please Test)

Since we came back for the new term samlearning.com has been dog slow here and at home.

 

can some users please test samlearning.com and post any findings good or bad

 

i have noticed that they have now gone to a secure site which does slow things down abit but not enough to make you fall asleep waiting for it to load.

 

it takes 64 seconds at my house to load the page thats on a 10 meg connection.

 

same at school which leads me to believe the site has issues.

 

Latest java and flash installed also

It took about 4 seconds to load here on a normal DSL connection. It could well be the case that the site is being overloaded at peak times. You could try contacting them if that's the case? The site does contain Flash if that makes any difference.

I have the latest flash and shockwave java and all the other plugins you need these days yet it is dog slow at home also did you have the site cached at all?

It wasn't cached and I'm not behind a proxy or anything. Who's your ISP?

Unfortunately its a load issue does not cut it with teachers

 

If people could try during the day it would be great and give a better overview of the problem

By looking up the domain on 'who is' it appears samlearning.com have a dedicated server, so it should be able to deal with heavy load. How can I tell, you're wondering? 'Who is' can reveal an estimate of how many other websites are hosted on the same server. I've no idea how much bandwidth they have however.

 

When you're dealing with Flash/multimedia it is extremely resource hungry if you have thousands of users at once. I would recommend you closely monitor the time/performance and I'm quite sure you'll probably notice a pattern.

However (I'm going to contradict myself now), the only other possibility is the website has a dedicated IP pointing to a shared server. A single server could have many dedicated IPs all served on the same physical hardware. To be honest, I would be surprised if it was hosted on a shared platform.

Yes we do pay for the service which has been perfectly fine for a few years now but since the site has gone to https it is sometimes dog slow to load the main page once you are on the site all seems well.

 

 

I need a real test under load which would be in school hours.

if its not broke dont fix it.......

Yes i know that i should contact the supplier but if i ring them up and say "your sites slow" it does not help them identify the problem, When i contact tech support for anything i like to do as many tests as possible so that i dont have to waste time talking to a script monkey.

 

i would like to be prepared with other users experiences of the site.

Some traceroutes to the secure area of their site might be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

 

https:// is always going to be a little slower over standard http://, but it's not noticeable normally.

unfortunately trace route are ping blocked by the isp so testing sites becomes harder and harder

 

traced http activity on my pc at home using httpwatch and the results were

 

http://www.samlearning.com (instant)

the site redirects to https://samlearning.com this took 64 seconds to load then all the flash and java stuff loaded pretty much instantly.

 

its the redirect to the https thats throwing things for me.

 

tested again 5 mins later instant loading (servers should not be under load at 10:15pm)

 

 

i will send a screen shot of the httpwatch activity to samlearning

If Any forum users have a second to test samlearning.com tomorrow during school hours it would be much appretiated.

By looking at the statistics there were 203 users today and 32,680 users this month so far. I don't know if these are unique hits or just total hits. It is unusual (I have to admit) running the whole site as a secure site. Even banking websites do not do this. I suspect with Flash and secure browsing, this is going to add quite a big overhead.

I can confirm also that I can re-create your problem. When the website is open in your browser and you refresh the browser; there is a noticeable pause. It lasts about 20-25 seconds. Definitely a problem I agree.

When I try on IE8 it freezes when I refresh the page. When I try with Firefox 3.5.2 it's fine, no problems refreshing.

I agree, Sam Learning has been absolutely crawling since the start of Sept .. IE8 on our terminal servers it crashes the browser completely or if your lucky hangs for 30 seconds and then seems to load up.

 

On other browsers I have seen a delay of about 10 seconds when your trying to type in your username and password, its a bit of a nightmare for us in support!

 

Its crawling right now by the looks of things.. why use https for the whole site?!? I have sent them emails about this but they don't seem to be fixing it quickly..

Dead slow here too.

 

Also the teacher account seems to have had the password changed mysteriously since the 'upgrade' and and as admin I cannot seem to change it back. It says I can but does not let me see the account to change it Gaaaahhh!!

 

On the plus side you can bulk upload uses into it now.
