Rozzer Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hey folks, Been a while since i been on here glad to see its still growing Now i have returned back to my old job and they have just bought 65 macs are intending to bootcamp XP onto them. Just wanted some of your opinions because i am quite worried that this is going to be a suicide mission Ross
GrumbleDook Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I am presently rebuilding my OSX Server now as part of redoing our management of Macs and this will include BootCamp (Parallels is just not suitable in this case). Add me to your MSN buddies and we can compare notes. @Kingswood: fancy meeting up for lunch and a chat about this too? @Roberto: mind if I rack your brains too? I have a few ideas about home areas that are slightly different to yours and want to check you haven't already tried them and scrapped them.
DMcCoy Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Don't you need a Full XP license (or a full something to upgrade from)? As you can't buy it with XP and you can't use OEM. If you do, then its going to be quite expensive.
Rozzer Posted August 14, 2006 Author Posted August 14, 2006 No problem i am quite interested to see what everyone else is doing with bootcamp. Its a shame that they have just gone out and bought the 65 macs. Just wish they listened to my warnings its like putting vista out in beta stages. Grumble have you seen any software which does not run on bootcamp?
GrumbleDook Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Try and pick up old copies of windows 9x or 3.1/3.11 and then pickup XP upgrades on a select licence. Works out cheaper ... but they are becoming harder to get hold of.
DMcCoy Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I shall be rebuilding my os x server next week, and attempting the AD integration. Fingers crossed
bossman Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I must have at least 40 licenses of 98 kicking about in my store cupboard which i came upon quite by surprise will look them out and give exact figure if anyone is interested?
GrumbleDook Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 If they are not OEM then I am very interested ... :-)
Norphy Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Don't you need a Full XP license (or a full something to upgrade from)? As you can't buy it with XP and you can't use OEM. If you do, then its going to be quite expensive. As I understand it, an OEM licence has to be bought with a computer, a hard drive, a CPU or a motherboard. As long as you buy the OEM licence with the Mac (ie put it on the same order) I don't see the problem.

As long as you get them *with* the machines, and there is nothing in the terms about using OEM bundled with another os and you should be fine.
GrumbleDook Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Why would you want Bootcamp in a school? We have a few pieces of music software that are PC only ... I would still like to be able to offer them to students when needed ... until I can get everyone hooked on garageband ... which everyone who has used it so far is ...
drjturner Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Hi We purchased via genuine advantage tool, I am not sure if you still get your educational discount but we got ours for £92. To do this you just need to do a windows update and the genuine advantage tool gives you the option to purchase. A key is emailed and a disk sent in the post. You do know that boot camp runs out September 2007, we will be trying Leopard later in the week, I will let you know how it is.
woody Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 You do know that boot camp runs out September 2007, we will be trying Leopard later in the week, I will let you know how it is. What do you mean by 'it runs out'? It stops working? Or not supported?
drjturner Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I found this in point 3 here http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/terms.html I am not sure what it will do, but they will want you to buy leopard as bootcamp will be integrated and is currently beta. Term of License. The term of this License shall commence upon your installation or use of the Apple Software and will terminate automatically without notice from Apple upon the next commercial release of the Apple Software, or September 30, 2007, whichever occurs first. Your rights under this License will also terminate automatically without notice from Apple if you fail to comply with any term(s) of this License. Upon the termination of this License, you shall cease all use of the Apple Software and destroy all copies, full or partial, of the Apple Software.
DMcCoy Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Q: What is the genuine Windows offer? A: The Microsoft genuine Windows offer is designed to help customers who unknowingly purchased counterfeit versions of Windows XP by offering those who qualify a complimentary copy or electronic license key for a genuine copy of Windows XP. Q: Who can participate in the genuine Windows offer? A: The offer is open to any person who purchased Microsoft Windows XP (Professional or Home Edition) or Windows XP Operating System pre-installed on a new computer. Windows XP upgrade purchases and purchases made under volume license agreements are not eligible. I'm quite sure its not designed for getting cheap copies of xp
drjturner Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 And this IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS IS BETA, TIME-LIMITED SOFTWARE MEANT FOR EVALUATION PURPOSES ONLY. THIS SOFTWARE SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A COMMERCIAL OPERATING ENVIRONMENT OR WITH IMPORTANT DATA. BEFORE INSTALLING THE APPLE SOFTWARE, YOU SHOULD BACK UP ALL OF YOUR DATA AND REGULARLY BACK UP DATA WHILE USING THE APPLE SOFTWARE. note the "TIME-LIMITED"
woody Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Interesting...... it looks like it will continue to work, but it will become illegal at the end of september. I wonder how many will uninstall it and buy Leopard? I suppose if you already have your HD partitioned with Windows on, you won't need bootcamp unless you need to reconfigure.

It would appear that part of the upgrade process of Leopard will check for BootCamp partitions and make a few changes (usual warning of backing up work etc ..) The Beta will not stop until Leopard has been out for one quarter (theoretically if Leopard comes out on 1st July 2007 then BootCamp will cease to be an active Beta on the last day of September ... but it is likely to continue to work) I am waiting for a seed of Leopard too ... It looks very nice from what I have seen / played with so far.
Ric_ Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 @Grumbledook: Have you been buying mice and OEM XP licenses then for all your Macs?
GrumbleDook Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 We picked up some 3.11 and 95 licences and have been buying the XP upgrades ... we are at the limit of that now (which is why I am interested in fanyone has any old licences) and will have to start going down the mouse / XP OEM route ... Finding a good supplier for this is interesting as our regular supplier was going to do it last year and then said they couldn't ... and then they could ... @Ric_: Are you using Ollis for yours?
drjturner Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Scan will sell you them. You can even buy a power lead and oem license as a pc needs a power lead to power it. Just remember the 95 / 3.11 licenses you buy have to be unregistered and not have a computer manufacturers name on the coa/book. Best Regards Dan
john Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I get mine from CCL when I have needed them in the past, a 99p bargin mouse and an XP Pro OEM has been excellent value.
