I'm finishing off my column, but one quetsion is nagglingly difficult to find an answer for: As soon as I have transferred my digital photographs to my computer I rename them so that the file name relates to the subject of the photograph and to keep them in order i.e. 005 Tower of London.jpg. When I display them full screen on my computer or on my TV the filename is not visible. Is it possible to put the filename minus extension onto the picture as a caption? It would be preferable to do this as a batch process rather than one at a time. I've had a look through Picasa and can find no options for this, and have drawn a blank online. Perhaps it's just one of those awkward 'You are simply expecting too much' questions?
Domino Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 A batch Job in photoshop would do it - but it'd need a bit of fiddling and I don't have a copy here. Maybe GIMP could do the same?
webman Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 IfranView looks like it can do this. File > Batch Conversion/Rename. Choose files. In "Batch conversion settings", tick: "Use advanced options". Click Advanced. Tick "Add overlay text", click Settings. In the "Text" box, the variable for the filename (without extension) is $N (help button explains them all). Adjust other parameters for alignment. 2

File > Slideshow. Set options, add files. Tick "Show text" - have $N in there somewhere. You can even export them to EXEs/SCRs. 2
LeMarchand Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 (edited) There seems to be a Photoshop Plugin that will do this, as well as a few commercial programs. However (I haven't tried this to see if it works) looking at Irfanview's batch processing options in "Advanced" you can "Add Overlay Text" and set it as filename. Too slow.
