Summer Work

Installed 4 IP camera's with POE.

Built 20 machines

Rebuild a server and installed R2 Print Management correctly.

Redone all Group policies.

Wired computer room.

Installed 2 smartboards

Installed 3 projectors and mounts.

 

All in all its been quite busy but so much more fun than having to deal with staff/teachers.

 

I'm sure my partner thinks I am having an affair as I am working longer hours than usual.

plexer how much do you charge the wife has plans for me to do the same in two weeks.

 

As for school work I sat around drank some coffee... drank some more then realised I'm only here another 1 and a half weeks

 

I'm looking at our group policies at the moment I think ours are very untidy and so I plan to re do them too, have you got any hard rules that you always work by. I'm also looking at implementing censor.net looks good from what I have seen of it.

Well hopefully I'm never going to do another bathroom ever again.

 

Last week removed the old beth which was an old cast iron one lovely bath but the surface was getting a big grotty so rather than have it resurfaced or anything though we'd get a new suite. Plus tiles were falling off the walls so they've all been pulled off. The main walls for the shower have been covered in tile backer board which is a 12mm cement board.

 

Got to redo all the hot pipes tomorrow as the isolation valves I fitted don't seal perfectly on the old pipes so going to renew it with new 22mm copper.

 

Then just got to join the new plastic waste pipes to the old copper ones and should then have a working bath before I start tiling.

 

To do this for anyone else I'd charge about £100 an hour

I did our bathroom last year. I know which one I prefer, especially when trying to hide all the pipework and my desire to use compression joints everywhere.

Wierd - do you think bathrooms are something that techies are often involved with,

coz currently I am:

building a machine, putting image on network, imaging 28 machines - finding I can't activate XP as the workmen replacing the school roof have screwed the internet somehow (AARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!) AND...

at home, pulling the tiles off the bathroom wall ready to re-do the whole room!

I have been trawling through carpet places for suitable flooring for the kitchen ... arguing with B&Q over the placement of units, trying to get back in touch with the British Gas engineer who is sorting the new boiler ... oh yeah ... and trying to spend a few days chilling out.

 

Also trying to move the existing school website over to Joomla ... but I am close to saying 'sod it' and just spending more time on World of Warcraft instead.

 

Back in work tomorrow for a day to interview a prospective student placement and then do a handover with the Business Manager to look after the place whilst she is on holiday (we are having a block knocked down and rebuilt bigger and better this year ... and so we are sorting out the temporary accomodation for admin staff, services, telephones, toilets ... there you go Ric ... this is why I have lots of minions ... so I can spend my time doing this instead!)

I have so far achieved:

 

Everything that my NM hasn't, some of what my NM decided to turn up for.

 

I've tidied all the IT suites, installed Flowol system-wide, rebuilt some new machines, fixed the learning mentor's home machine (for a few quid ), ordered new remotes, fixed some knackered machines, got quotes for things the NM is supposed to be ordering... and organised the removal/redeployment of the old music/art machines to admin (ssshhhhh, the head of IT will go mental if he thinks equipment is being removed from Teaching & Learning to go to admin. What he conveniently forgets is that if admin don't have the machines - the school stops running).

 

... all in between organising appointments with the mortgage advisors at Nationwide to find out if my new job will allow me to move to bigger and better things.

 

Only then will I discover just how much fun DIY is... at the moment the flat I live in is 8mths old and therefore needs no work at all..

 

I'll stick to the ironing ;-)

You reckon that some of us don't have to do this anyway?

 

(Helpfull note - Yellow pages for portacabin with toilets, usual contractor to lay a fibre to said portacabin and data points for admin PCs and IP phones. Just saved you LOADS of work )

We have done,

 

-Replaced all PCs in a computer suite

-Installed a New AD server to take the load of DC

-Replaced the Printer Server

-Reinstalled Media Server with bios udpdate to recognise the 2 processors

-Upgraded the RAM in every staff laptop

-Ordered 12 Laptops to replace the last of the RM (Samsung) A10s from laptop for teachers

-Install SIMS on every teachers PC and Laptop ready for leason monitor

-Assisted with the promotion in SIMS

-Installed 3 new SDLT 600 drives

-Supervised the instalation of 6 new Activboards

 

Still to do is,

-create new images for pc's with all new software on it

-Replace PCs in another suite

-Reallocate and Relocate all the 3yr old PCs from the suite

-Set up new Staff Laptops

-Create new year 7 users (5min script)

-Clean the cupboard outside our office out

-Setup Lesson monitor

-Help with Timetabling

 

and possibly any other little thing that crops up

In the two weeks I was in, bossman and I have sorted out the server room with a new UPS and two TeraStations, and moved the switches & cabling into another cabinet. Built some software packages of Foxit PDF Reader and a few multimedia codecs. We've also replaced the pick-up assembly on an HP 4600 printer - that was certainly an experience.

Well for past two weeks been off work but have got fun at home of converting attic...

 

arr i am real tech i don't get workmen in do it myself imagine handy andy with more accidents (already fell down stairs (you see will do anything to try and get out of it) ... maybe not handy andy more like tim the toolman taylor....
