button_ripple Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 We are with E2BN, the internet speed is "up to" 2MB, we are a primary school with around 500 kids and about 75-100 workstations. Can't remember the exact price, but it was between £750 - £1000 (i think). 1

Is this 100mb true bandwidth (i.e. no contention ratio) or shared on a ration of 1:n i.e. 4, 8, 16 businesses sharing the pipe? I do find that Zen seems to be expensive, yes given the reliabiliy and support is good but still the cost does need to be understood by Zen as well as the customer i.e. discounts for education and selling under the catalyst (OCS buying solutions). Ash.

AngryTechnician Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Nothing more than an ADSL Max line here, actual sync is about 7100kbps, on Zen Business 8000 with enhanced care. Costs us £91/month (so £1092pa). Large primary school. Love to have a better connection but no budget for it this year... maybe next year though, and some of the posts here so far are looking interesting in terms of pricing. We actually switched away from RM ADSL Max Premier this year, which is £2,102/year, because we weren't seeing any extra benefit that we couldn't get from Zen (there are differences, they just weren't beneficial to us).

Fair point about the router, support etc, but other vendors have this as well so that nothing new. I was surpised that you guys needed a true 100mb connection. I thought it would be better to have say 40 or 60Mb connection and cut the cost to say £15-18K, would save the school some money per year. Whats your current average i.e. how much is used when the school is busy. Have you done any monitoring to see how much you guys are using. We have over 1700 users inc staff and 8mb Leased line is fine. Even in the busy times its rearely more than 4Mb. Ash.

There are around 70 schools here, the total Segfl bill is allocated based on pupil count). Other schools have 100Mb, but also feeder sites using the same link. 3 Highs with 100Mb, 2 with 10Mb. Link from the Island to Segfl is 30Mb. High contention issues at the moment!
