vista drivers on 7

should these generally just work? Win 7 (RC so far) picked up pretty much everything, but trying to install the vista drivers for the fingerprint reader, touchpad, webcam, and memory card slot, all fail. Ive tried running them in vista compatibility mode, to no avail. Is there a trick, or should I wait to see if the laptop manufacturer will release updated drivers?

Vista drivers have mainly worked for me (like you, i've hardly needed additional drivers tho - 7 gets most of my hardware without requiring additional drivers).

I did find that an XP driver for an old / ultra cheap webcam worked on it too!

Yeah, My Dell Studio 17 worked fine used some windows vista drivers and it sorted most of my drivers

 

On my mates laptop i just found out the Hardware ID and got it from the Manafacturer website.

Not tried any xp drivers yet right enough, might try that. I dont see any win7 drivers on the manufacturers website, maybe some might some in due course.

 

The vista driver install just fails with the error "failed to update driver"

nah xp dont work.. didnt think they would.. but suprised the vista ones dont either..

 

Will try RTM as soon as I can get enough bandwidh to download it. Capped internet sucks.

Most vista drivers will work on 32 and 64-bit editions, I've installed vista drivers on a few widnows 7 machines.

actually, its win 7 x64 im running, where vista and xp were 32. Will check to see if theres 64 vista drivers.

If anyone can recommend me another 11" laptop with 7 hrs battery, that weighs less than an eee700, ill be willing to give that a try too...

True most of the Sonys are designed to look like a Mac anyway and often cost just as much.

 

If you can track down the specific parts then looking on the manufactures website will often get you more up to date drivers i.e intel for network cards, graphics etc, synaptics for touch pad drivers etc, instead of all direct from sony.

for a full spec, business laptop, thats the size of a netbook but not, I honestly dont know of any other. Granted, it was quite expensive, but it was the same price as my alienware which was dead 3 times in warranty, and within 10 days out of warranty.

 

Anyway, best answer of the night goes to Tallwood_6. Will give that a try.

Use SIW ( SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala ) to establish that or similiar tool ie belarc or everest etc

My work laptop is an HP Elitebook 2530p; it has a 12" screen but I don't know if that's too big for you. The battery life is amazing - it'll run pretty much all day if you're not doing too heavy stuff with it.

 

There are a variety of specs available depending on what you want (eg if you can lose the optical drive to get a big hard disc)

 

Windows finds all the drivers for Windows 7 with one exception - it has something called Driveguard which shuts down the hard disc if the machine is jogged. The Vista driver doesn't work (installs OK but tends to shut down the disc and won't come back on - makes it a bit difficult!)
