Vista - yes or no?

Hi guys!

So many times I heard people saying that Vista is not an improvement.

Then other people say that it's better than windows?

Can somebody please give me a short resume why I should get vista or why I shouldn't?

I am not what you call a computer-wizz so please be gentle?

tbh I would get windows 7, most of the issues with vista have been fixed and it comes out on the 22nd of October (public) with others getting earlier access.

Agreed. Vista will be forgotten as quickly as Microsoft can get away with it (remeber how fast ME vanished from the M$ website once XP was released!)

Besides. I've been using W7 for quite a bit now. Its far more lightweight and responsive than Vista whilst having far more bells and whistles!

Vista was a horse designed by commitee. W7 was designed by first sacking the comittee IMHO!

i have few problems with vista but as windows 7 is out in2 months its not worth deploying it anymore

Yes, if it's a volume license but it's a very low impact service and you can put it pretty much anywhere. The systems activated from your KMS check back in every 7 days and if the KMS is unavailable then they'll keep re-trying, only de-activating if they fail to make contact within 180 days (not sure of the exact numbers but they're about right). This means that even if someone takes the computer off network, provided they come back every few months it will still work fine (so teacher laptops need to come in about once a term)

As the others have said "Vista" like another OS which was slotted in between recodes (ME) has served it's purpose in being relatively useless for what it was intended except for giving the next OS a good name.

 

Go with windows 7 when it is released you will not be as disappointed hehe!

Another vote for Win 7. I've been a big XP fan since it came out but was never convinced by Vista. I've been testing Windows 7 on an old laptop (Pentium M 1.3GHz with 512MB RAM) and it works well. There are lots of small changes (relative to XP; I can't speak about Vista) that make life a lot easier.

Yes i would also recommend you go windows Windows 7 dont bother with Vista you will get upset and move to Linux *joke*

Another one for Windows 7 here, I remember when I first installed Vista a couple of years ago and had a few annoying issues with it (In general use it was Ok). I installed the RC of Windows 7 in May and have had no problems that couldn't be fixed within a few minutes.

I've been using Windows 7 for a good couple of months now.

 

I've just installed Windows 7, Enterprise Edition (RTM) on Work PC, Work Laptop (Del Latutude D430), and Home PC (All 64-bit editions)

 

I've been blown away at how well they perform.

Working on my Vista image at the moment. Windows 7 just hasn't been out long enough for essential applications we use to be fully compatible, otherwise I would be using that instead.

 

Vista SP2 really isn't that bad, I do feel that there's quite a lot of placebo going on with Windows 7 for a lot of people, it is only Vista 1.1 after all.

At this point in time you might as well wait for Windows 7.

 

However, we've got a couple of rooms running on Vista and to be honest we've never had any serious issues with it. Once you get it how you want it it is just as good as XP but looks nicer IMO.

Personally I cannot say yes or no and I'll explain why -

 

If you're already running Windows Vista, by applying SP2 before installing any other applications works well.

 

If you're still running 2000 or XP, you can either wait a few more years to install Windows 7 and skip Windows Vista altogether, or install Windows 7 starting from next year.

 

I'm a little reluctant to start deploying Windows 7 so soon and I believe it does pay to wait a little.

We have been running Vista Enterprise 32bit in a couple of schools and a business or two for a fair while now. More than a year in one case and it has performed fine, it was as expected a bit slower on some of the older hardware that we had (Celleron 2GHZ) but still functional for primary school usage. The .net 3.5 SP1 upgrade gave a perceptable boost in speed and SP2 made them even quicker. On some systems Vista SP2 is at least even if not a little faster than Windows 7.

 

That said if you have waited this long you may as well just wait the extra two weeks and go to 7 instead rather than wasteing money and time on a system that is about to be outdated.
