have you setup the rule on your ISA box?

Protocols: NNTP / NNTPS / SMTP Server / SMTP

From: Internal / Local Host / (COMPUTER) < You might need to add this if you havent already done so

To: yoursmarthostaddress

ALLOW

??

Good point - will check it, though think its already there!

silly thought but is the router configured properly to forward?

do you get any NDR's?

For outgoing it shouldn't need to.

Is port 25 blocked going outwards?

Posted

No, its open...

Not had any NDRs yet - just "Delayed" reports...

Seems odd that i can receive but not send - usually its the other way round!

Right, This is what I need to work on over the weekend

Checked the Message Queue in EMS and seen this:

451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "." Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate

hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts.

I can find no reference to "." however...

At home as caretaker chucked us all out and sodding VPN still isn't working

Where abouts is your smarthost located in relation to your exchange server?

One good test - see if you can telnet to your smarthost (on port 25) from your exchange box. You may also get a more meaningful error message!

Make sure you are specifying port 25 as the port - telnet will just default to 23 otherwise

Will do

Weird thing is that it was working on my previous setup albeit on Exchange 2003!

Guessing my ISA is a bit pear shaped as cannot get my VPN working either!

I can get out but nothing can in!!

It's beginning to look that way..

What are the benefits for having an Edge Server and where is best to put it? (in or out of the domain?)

Posted

You aren't still running an Exchange 2003 server in parallel are you? That bugged me for a few weeks when I added Ex2k7 and Edge to the list.

Edge server's are handy, basically they sit at the Edge (shock horror!) and filter all the crap before it reaches anyone's mailbox, we're using one here and it's very swish, it doesn't add any overhead to the other boxes handling mail rules it does other things obviously, transport rules etc, but we're using it as a spam filter ultimately.

Quite a few of Microsoft's products now come with an Edge functionality, OCS being the other I can think of immediately.

No its a brand new network & domain - no trace of E2k3 anywhere

Think I'm gonna rebuild the ISA server on Monday and see if that helps...

Always worth checking, your Anti-Virus isn't blocking the Transport service/executables is it?

I took teh software firewall and AV out of the equation completely while I feebly attempted to understand the complexities of Exchange.

Being able to connect to your smart host from either any PC in the domain or your ISA/Exchange box is a given...

It'd be worth verifying your Send Connector is setup correctly and if you think it is, start playing with it until the b~%&$£d works!

I believe, I can't remember, that our Send Connector provides our Smart Host in response to HELO/EHLO as well being listed as "route through the following smart host" option...

On a side note: mmmmmm Jaffa Cakes.

I must admit i had a few problems with ISA 2006 to start with but got their in the end.

@ GATT if you want i will send you over a copy of our config and you can take a look at that it might help you solve the problem. our setup is also through a smarthost :)

It's not like your smoothwall box is it with int/ext being the same subnet? as it will think that the server it's trying to contact is in it's local subnet and not use the router.
