fafster Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I'm in short supply of 0.5 metre and shorter cables. Everywhere I look the cables are a pound or more whereas I'm pretty sure that not so long back you could pick them up for 20p. If it comes down to it I can cut them myself, but it's a huge PITA and I won't really have the time. Any help appreciated!
SC-UK Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 If you mean patch cables then I have always found CPC to be fairly reasonable if you look hard enough. Depending on how many you need it's probably cheaper to get a big drum of cable and make them up yourself.
pavlovs_dog Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I tend to look in the clearance section of PCWorld Business - usually pick them up for about 20p. Some times they have hundreds available othertimes it is just a few. 1

fafster Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Cheers for the replies. Looking here: Videk Cat5ee STP Patch Cable Red0.5mtr 1962-0.5B - PC World Business Online Store UK - Buy The Best Deals Online. As you can see from the title, it's listed as STP. Why on earth would you need shielded cabling only half a metre long?

I know it's a short length but shielded cables can work wonders!

plexer Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I buy only excel unbooted for my cabs. £0.56 I think they were.
torledo Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 From a server to a main switch or something? I know it's a short length but shielded cables can work wonders! the switch would have to be pretty b***** close to the back of the server with 0.5m cables. Interesting idea to go with STP cables for top of rack applications.

If you value your time you really don't want to be making patch cables (and particularly if you need more than the odd one-off)
MatthewL Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Have a look at this place. We have started ordering all our leads from here now, we go through alot of the 0.3m ones in the cabs now as we go around the 150 sites tidying cabs so have had a fair few from them!
AngryTechnician Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 If you value your time you really don't want to be making patch cables (and particularly if you need more than the odd one-off) I actually save up all the patch cables I find with broken plugs (i.e. retaining clip snapped off) and re-terminate them on the extremely rare occasion that I find myself at a loose end (pun absolutely intended, harhar). Partly it's because I hate throwing things out, but I also find it oddly relaxing. Plus, it makes me feel better about the small fortune I paid for my Linkrunner because I'm getting some use out of it!
