Which way to licence server 2003

Right, bit of a grey area for me and I would really appreciate anyone who can clear his up -

 

I currenly am looking to replace my PDC with new hardware, do I need a new server 2003 licence if I decomission the old server with 2003 on it after the swap?

 

If I need a new licence will I need new CALs?

 

Currently all PCs have there own licences brought with the PCs no VL or similar.

Depends on the original 2003 server licence how did you buy that?.

Chances are you're probably running an OEM version of 2003 Server and you can buy a VL version for about £60.

How easy is it to move from a 2003 enviroment to 2008? Many diferences or is it pretty much 2003 but better?

You can use 2003 by buying a 2008 server licence therefore no new cals required.

 

If you upgrade to server 2008 you will need new cals.

I'd only recommend 2008 Server if you're running XP SP3 or Windows Vista, otherwise there's little benefit upgrading to 2008. With Windows 7 on the horizon however, that also is a good enough reason to start deploying 2008 Server.

Moving from 2003 to 2008 is very easy, I've found general file transfers is a lot better, much better group polices stuff also
