What RAID Card would you be using with it as if its vital I would go for an add-on board RAID card rather than Motherboard based RAID. Also 8GB Ram now is very much common place on servers and usually cheap enough to do. Also is that CPU a Quad Core Xeon or Standard Desktop Quad core?

Hi will you be purchasing a purpose built storage case to house the 14 HDD's?

If you are building it yourself, ensure you build it so that cooling is considered. you going to need some decent system to keep it running at comfortable temps!

Hi there.

Hope you're well on this bright and sunny day (well it is on the train to London!).

Have you looked at the S7000 from Sun? Go to Sun UK > View Sun's Home Page and have a look at it.

Might surprise you as to how clever and capable it is. Quite a few people on here have gone down the S7000 route so you can ask them what they think of it.

Any questions then please drop me a line or call on the number below.

Warmest regards,

Phil

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

I've asked our supplier about which RAID card and Processor it is, so will post the results when I get them.

It is a bought not built server and comes with 12 hot swap drive bays on the front for easy access.

I did look at the Sun stuff and it looks very nice, but, being a primary school we don't really have a huge amount of use for all of the features available on it and the main thing that I'm looking for is some where for the teachers to store music/video/pictures. I think something like the machine specified above would be fast enough for the amount of simultaneous users we would probably have using it.

Simon -> ask Mark for them ;)

No worries. Fully understand the issues at Primary School level as am chair of the GB at my local school.

Have you checked out the X4xxx series of x86 Sun servers? Might be a good alternative to the "whitebox" server you're looking at...

If you need any help then please let me know.

Warmest regards,

Phil

Further information:

? The processor is a Xeon Quad Core 2.66 (server specification)

? The RAID controller is an Intel manufactured SRCSAS144E

? The cost to upgrade to 8Gb of RAM is an additional £70.00

Do you think it's worth having the 8Gb of RAM for a storage server?

If you go for a 64bit OS then yes. As the server will use spare ram as buffers for File I/O. Thus frequently accessed files will be served from RAM rather than disk. Which will speed things up immensely.
