We are definitely getting a new server (:rapture:) and I am trying to future proof it as much as funds will allow.

I don't know what is the best option for a backup system. I have been quoted for and HP RDX system (it is an HP ML350 server) with options for 160, 320 or 500 GB cartridges. I would go for the middle option as this is about twice our current capacity.

But is this the best thing to go for? Are there other options we could consider. Currently I do a daily backup that has to alternate between the various drives because our tapes are too small. We don't currently take data off site as there is no sensitive stuff but we will soon have the possibility of sensitive data as the teachers will be able to reach SIMS through a trust onto the admin server.

All ideas gratefully received

Future proof:

Nas box with HPLT04 ultrium autoloader which encrypts data to take off site giving a true D2D2tape backup.

Disk backup quick through the night and tape drive backup through the day from the NAS server. :)

Tape capacity 800Gb native up 2 1.2Tb compressed.

BTW Hiya from both of us.

Yes agree with bossman on the future proofing.

Whatever size you think you need now, in a year you'll need more and in three years you'll be buying a new backup drive again :(

Agree with Bossmans suggestion, that is where I will be aiming for in the next 100000 years when we get some money! SAN this year, and if I can manage it a 4TB NAS box for our Second Building to backup the SAN to, then the following year another SAN to match the first one / replace / go with (what ever i decide at the time) and then a decent LTO4 tape drive, use the tape drive for backing up critical stuff that I need to know is really really safe and then mix and match and do funky stuff on that as I see fit etc :) All running with Symantec Backup-Exec which I have always liked :)

Er, can you explain that a little better? What would I have to buy exactly? Are you saying that I need the tape drive I spoke of AND a Nas box with HPLT04 ultrium uploader (whatever the heck that is?) If so, then price might be a bit of a problem

Are there multiple buildings on your site? If so, place a NAS at the far side of the school, and back up to that. The chances of a fire spreading that far is minimal. For paranoia purposes, get a few USB drives and attach them weekly to the NAS, back up the back up over a weekend, and put the USB drive in the safe.

Hiya ;)

What you need is 1 x NAS Box decent spec so no bottlenecks and 1 x HPLT04 Autoloader tape drive and that is all you need, apart from the tapes which are approx £50 each.

For a full set you will need 10 tapes for basic backup set depending on how much data you have to backup.
