Gatt Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 What would you guys recommend for a backup solution that works on Windows 2008 (DFS & VSS), Exchange 2007 and Sql Server 2005? At moment all we have is Volume Shadow copy! I am trying to resource a couple of External HDD's (1.5Tbs) to keep offsite backups Is BackupExec any good? and can it do all 3 above?

IrritableTech Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 We put in a R1soft CDP server at Easter with three windows agents. I have been really impressed with it. Saved my bacon a few weeks ago when a server went south. Full system drive restore had me up and running again in a matter of a couple of hours. I also find the guys at R1soft are very helpful. We had an issue with the LEAs proxy messing up the activation. R1soft changed my licence so I didn't have to activate.

plexer Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Yup that will be it not being able to contact the activation server. I don't think the cdp server itself is set up to use a proxy so it's trying to connect directly. Ben

We use BackupExec 12 on our Windows 2008/Exchange 2007 server. Seems to work well. I'm pretty certain there is support for SQL Server 2005 too. 1

k-strider Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 DPM is worth a look for sure! you can have a upstream DPM server too that could be off site not got that far yet though, I've just got an on-site dpm box at the moment. Especially since the educational price is next to nothing.

Especially since the educational price is next to nothing. DPM is very good for Disk-Disk - I can't fault it. Tape, however, I would avoid at all costs as it's very inflexible with what it can do, compared to say BackupExec. I'm now having to look at something else to deal with backing up to tape. How does BackupExec do Disk-Disk wise?
Gatt Posted June 23, 2009 Author Posted June 23, 2009 Might take a look at DPM.. Tried BE but it struggled with the Network HDD The prob I've found with the N-HDD is that the USB can only be used to span to another N-HDD - not to copy files with - that has to be done via the network..
