My post wasn't about increasing wages for everyone. It was about the fact that up to 30% of the working population need benefits of some sort and to varying degrees just to be able to live. I was pointing to the same thing you are, that the cost of living and the wages don't match and whilst people sit around bashing the minority of people on benefits that sit in abject poverty, thye miss the reality which is a system that allows them to work full time and still not be able to afford a decent standard of living. You could stop all the long term unemployed benefits tomorrow and it would barely make a dent in the bill at all. Those that Nephilim are talking about are not exactly going to walk into a job paying them 20k a year. They are going to walk out into a tesco job for minimum wage and still receive half the benefits they are getting now. The problem is simple, for the majority of people, working simply doesn't provide the quality of life it used too. People can argue semantics and details all they like but that is the reality. You don't work then you don't have to worry about bills but you're poor as hell. You do work and you're going to have to worry about bills and council tax and all for an extra night out a week. Who's the real mugs here? us or them?

Nephilim, I don't think you realise that the people you are talking about cost a fraction compared to the benefits bill for people that do actually work. The highest slice of the bill is for housing benefit (for people that work yet can't even afford a roof) and tax credits (for people that work and can still barely afford to live). My problem isn't with so called scroungers because frankly, they barely cost the system anything in comparison and the TV and nice sofa is paid for on finance. If you think they are living the dream you are mistaken, most of them are living in constant debt, unable to afford to do most things that most working people take for granted. A few bear baiting examples in the daily mail won't change that fact. You should be complaining about the fact your partner can work full time (I assume) and still barely afford to live. Ask your self what sort of system allows an entire swathe of the population to work full time, for a wage that is so low compared to living costs that they the government is forced to prop them up financially? It isn't the benefits culture thats the problem. It's the simple fact that most people will never earn "the average wage" of £25k PA and yet you need to earn more than that to be able to afford a normal standard of living. I wouldn't be getting jealous of someone taking home 22k in benefits because remember, that's shared between an entire family and it includes the housing benefit etc. Think how much they have left every week and ask your self why the hell they would go to work for the same amount when 5 million people work full time and still need extra money so they don't sink into abject poverty.

I have already been in Education and left again for the private sector. I just hate application forms. I fail to see how they safe guard children in any way that couldn't be accomplished without the form. It's duplicate work and I suppose what we should ask if why the private sector doesn't feel the need to use them for every single role. I think only one I have applied for required an application form. One could argue that application forms put people who are crap are writing "I am amazing" in a succinct way, at a disadvantage? I just don't see any pros to an application form aside from "I can't be bothered doing the leg work that comes with employing someone". Then again the public sector isn't exactly known for it's efficiencies .

The PC vs MAC question is only one is my eyes; value for money. What will these MACs do that a PC for half the price won't? nothing and that's the truth, not only will the outright cost be raised but the indirect and long term costs are realistically going to be multiplied. Having a mac is not an enhancement of anything. The iPad one is up in the air for me. yes they are more portable than a laptop but then, a notebook is cheaper and does more and in a better fashion. They have their uses but the reality is for the money, it's just not justifiable. I would say stick to your guns. Change for the sake of change is always wrong. Justifiable managed change is the correct way.

Can you ping googles IP addrss when the internet has "dropped out"? also, are any of your sites being redirected? like typing in google.com seems to search in Bing instead of actually going to google? or it just times out? try and get on bing.com next time it drops out. Reason I ask is that I was having similar problems the other week.

Add to the fact his lack of Charitable actions when compared to his peers, and the fact he was so bloody openly bitter against Microsoft right until the day he died and it paints a pretty negative picture of the man. Sort of like the kid at school who always shouted "That's my idea, you can't use it".

I think that's a bold claim. There are millions and millions working in IT, and nowhere near enough have the business sense or the concept over technical details way of thinking that is critical. In fact, most of the people I've met in IT usually are just pushing for the next OS upgrade or whatnot just "because". Then again, I could have simply met a lot of IT techies and not enough IT Professionals.

His success is born out of the fact that Apple let him do what he wanted, how he wanted, without any politics. Any artist or person good at product design like he was could achieve exactly the same thing if you have a board of directors and an entire company willing to let you interfere and micro-manage every last detail. Sadly people in other companies don't get that opportunity. He knew marketing mattered, he knew secrecy mattered and he knew aesthetics mattered, he was a magician and Apple bent over backwards to let him do exactly as he pleased because that was there last chance. Thank god they chose someone so adept at what he did. The actual technology isn't worth bragging about though (iPod and original iPhone aside), it's got a 70% margin on it and as we get further on they are struggling to revolutionize in the same way.

This +1 I think they are designed for lazy recruiters who can't be bothered to read a CV. I won't even apply for a job with an application form these days, even the ones that contact me asking me to apply. They are awful. I put a lot of time and care into my CV and then I'm demanded to snippit it out into an application form that misses half the critical things from my CV because there isn't a place on the form, and then they ask me to essentially do the interview for them with "Why are you right for this position?" where I have to regurgitate a load of crap into 4 paragraphs rather than the recruiter taking the time to interview the best on paper and see if their personalities match.
