I've just downloaded the app, but how on earth do you configure it? In the settings panel, where it asks for hostname or IP address, the phone only gives me a numeric pad to type with, so I can't enter letters nor '.' for an IP?

I've not done it yet. Your last response won't be suitable as it makes the whole directory web enabled, or creates further burden of setting appropriate permissions. I'll use Apache I think, and use the options in the link I found above.

Yeah, but then I'm not using the home directories am I? This is my problem... Apache does it nice and simply, I assumed IIS would.

That will work once, but not for multiples. I need to create webspace for all our students, quickly. Unless I've missed something. I may just use Apache with LDAP authentication instead: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/public_html.html

Hi, We have several thousand domain users, whose home directories are all stored on a central file share. I'd like to create webspace for them using IIS, quickly and easily, using a standard folder structure. e.g. d:\users\username\ftpFiles becomes http://servername/username Or something similar. Ease and quickness of implementation is better than tidyness. Any suggestions apprecaited. I haven't even *looked* at IIS since 2002, so this might be trivially easy, so excuse me not reading the manual first

addusers.exe feeds them in from a CSV. It's in one of the resource kits. Combine it with a batch script to use the same csv to create home directories and shares

Only thing that springs immediately to mind is to prevent profile caching so that the laptop will not logon without a connection to the network, although I'm not sure that it's fully possible. We use it in the other direction and it's been a while since I set it up.

Yes, that's right. However, I'd look at getting a bigger core switch and ensure that all connections come back to this point, so that you have a very large star. At the moment, there is a lot of switch traversal going on. For instance, there is a lot of hopping going on to get from the admin office to the server room.

Consider switches that will let you trunk ports. You may also see this listed as aggregation or bonding. That way, you can dedicate bandwidth to your uplinks.

Have you checked your cache size? I remember configuring mine too small, and the server spent the whole time reconfiguring its staging files rather than getting on with the jobl.

It's worth taking the course purely for the information you learn. Our external company tests *everything* (they are paid per test), and they always insist on taking our server/comms racks apart to test them. I am now qualified to remind them of what the actual requirements are.... Also, I found out just how dangerous my house is and that I didn't really understand wattage/fuse ratings and proper use of extension cables.

I'm sorry, but I believe that you are incorrect. It is never acceptable to do random checks on staff. Just because you have a statement in a document does not affect other statutory rights that staff have. I have legal qualifications and from what I recall the privacy laws as they exist, and what takes affect from EU case law is very murky. I would seek legal advice before even considering such a thing. From what I recall you are covered where you believe there is improper use being carried out, but not for random fishing trips.
