in theory you could even plug in a linux os install into it.

You sure someone wasn't pulling your leg? It took RM a while to sort out the PXE builds that worked from the start in vanilla deployment, but otherwise it is standard Windows OS deployment tech using WIM images and although I suppose someone might have been bored enough to make one, I've yet to see an imagex equivalent that will capture a (single instance file based) a *typical* nix file system to a WIM or write it back to a disk.

That you can use this MS tech to cope with Win7 is given[1]. For CC4 I reckon it's more about the Win7 specific policy/lockdown side of things and whether Win7 breaks any of the large number of RM apps running on the workstation.

Any news/rumours on the CC4 server OS e.g. 2k8, 2K8R2?

[1] You may now need the Win7 WAIK version of PE, the imaging API and tools to do Win7 deployment nicely.. does anyone know?

CC4 comes next week! Fingers crossed for a smooth installation. :D

Ha ha, good luck. Ours was started on the 27th and finished 3 weeks later, was only meant to take a week. Now doing the tedoius poart of rebuilding all the computers on site. Good thing is the CC3 computers work on the CC4 network.

We shall see about Win 7 they might say christmas but i bet something will put it back, not that i'm really that worried about having windows 7 straight away but i would like to start seeing 2K8R2 or at least 2003 64bit supported on CC4.

As said in theory but as for doing it another thing ;)

Hmm.. there's no upgrade path from x86 to x64 so that could be interesting i.e. how detachable might the RM stuff be from an x86 CC4 "forest root" server?

[it apparently wasn't that easy for CC3 given the BESR swaps to new hardware]

Wrong kind of word to use for something like that in front of someone who vaguely recalls doing double-maths and other things like "lemmas" an eon ago ;)

It will be interesting to see how the 64bit dilemma will be handled, i suspect they will put it off for as long as possible. Ultimately though as you say the in place upgrade which they are so fond of wont be possible and some kind of new migration process will have to be developed to get the postgres database etc off onto a new box.

Alot of code to look at for RM and i suspect they will probably end up dropping alot of legacy CC3 stuff such as printer credits.

Have 10 rm one pc's in one of my primary schools, cc4 seem to work pretty well on the all the new machine but the rm one's are rubbish in six months all 10 have failed and serval have had multiple swop outs.

Well here's a thought.. I believe MS W2K3 [& R2] *mainstream* support ends next summer. You then get the extended security stuff for another 5 years, but I'm not sure I'd want to be seen shipping new 2K3 R2 systems next summer. And because of the x64 thing I wouldn't want to be shipping x86 2K8 [R2] boxes either.

IOW I'd want everything running on 2K8 R2 x64 within a year (after which you start on the migration).

On CC4 it's possible to somehow get RM to put the users into folders on H:\RMUSERS; does anyone know how it's achieved?

At the moment they're all in H:\RMUSERS\Students for example but I know you can get H:\RMUSERS\Year 10 etc when you add them through the RMMC.

Not sure what you are asking?

Are you saying if looking in the RMMC you have all your users under one area. Then all you need to do in RMMC is create folder structure and then right click users you want to move and select move (you can do this in bulk if want) and move them to your year 10 folder for example.

Rather than having all student users in the same folder on the H:\ drive it's possible to put them into folders somehow. There's more to it than just moving them on this drive, iirc. It's somehow done through the management console. I've tried creating new folders in the RMMC but this still keeps the users in one place on the H:\ drive.

Does that make sense?

I want:

H:\RMUSERS\Year 10\JBloggs

H:\RMUSERS\Year 11\PSmith

As opposed to:

H:\RMUSERS\JBloggs

H:\RMUSERS\PSmith

In RMMC

  1. Select Users Section
  2. Users Servers
  3. Select the server
  4. Students
  5. Then under students right click and create new folder say called year 10
  6. Then browse the server where current users are lets say in students folder
  7. Select your year 10 students
  8. right click them
  9. click on move
  10. Then from next window move the users to year 10 folder

Once you done that they will get moved in h:\rmusers folder into the correct folder.

Alt you can drag students from students folder into your year 10 folder.

Unless that server only has student accounts, personally I would want to end up with:

H:\RMUSERS\Students\Year 10\JBloggs

H:\RMUSERS\Students\Year 11\PSmith

Have you done it yet? If so how fast was it? Seemed to take ages when I last went through essentially the same process.

In my steps I put it under students and do suggest you do it that way as it makes more sense,

Also we put all the staff in teaching folder etc regardless if they are support or teaching staff.

As for how long moving doesn't seem to take long on my system (SR1).

How does this work with their shared learning folders though? Can't remember exact name. Surely it'll show support staff in the drop down menu's or am I missing something? Can't remember the exact config for that, got it to do.

we're not RM we're vanilla but this still applies,

we don't name them year 10 / year 11 etc

we name them 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006 (year intake) otherwise you have to !promote! all the users at then end/start of academic year.

Speaking from a student standpoint, CC3 was pretty stable. We had few issues, and things did as they were supposed to. Life was good.

Over the holidays, my school upgraded to CC4.

Half the machines can no longer login, those that can have some unneeded and irritating software, and performance is worse.

Just throwing that one out there.

So from the vanilla network point of view, do we have any resources available that would help create a good vanilla network for a school ?

I.e.

How to deploy software

How to script and share printers

Best way to use profiles

GPO templates and settings.

How to config WSUS.

A good AD structure for schools

How to allow remote document access

Linking Systems - (MIS,Library,Cashless Catering,VLE,AD,VOIP)

Step by step planning a school network.

With all the good free edugeek tools available we could bundle a load together and end up with a really good competitor to RM/Viglen/CSE etc etc.

Now I know that every network is different but the majority of us are doing very similar things.
