inkjet printer advice please

its like this -- in a secondary school enviroment i hate inkjets and have refused to buy any new ones for 2-3 yrs now. However since the d&T sewing section decided to try and put iron on transfer paper into their nice very new colour laser ( with the expected results arrrghhhh ) i have come to realise they are prehaps a needed evil after all

 

so the advice i am after is on the following

 

1: needs to be easy to unblock\clean most important as gummed up jets are the achilles of these devices

 

2: resonably cheap to refill

 

not to worried about the price as it while it only be used for a 6-7 weeks each year and if the above criteria are met it should last at least 2 years

 

any advice gladly accepted gratefully

I'd recommend a HP K5400 series. It has individual ink carts, and also has replaceable print heads. Cheap to run (for an inkjet) and easy to sort out problems with.

I'd second that. We're still using the previous model (HP 1100 / 1200) because they use different ink cartridges and we didn't want to change just because a new model of printer had come out, plus we can get them cheap off eBay. I counted yesterday - we have 19 around the school.

 

For low-cost options, user "contink" on this forum sells continuous ink supplies for various printers. I have a kit for an HP K8600 from him which is doing a fine job printing out nice glossy A3 photo prints. I also recently got a continuous ink system for a 1200 off eBay which seems to be working okay. I had a leaflet from datacable the other day (see Datacable Ltd - Home) offering a K5400 complete with ink bag and modified case for around £600.

I too would recommend a K5400 but just as a word to the wise... get one NOW... they are now an our of stock item in most places as HP have brought out the 8000 series officejets which are fully pigment inks and highly likely to clog like crazy if the black ink in the K5400/K550 was anything to go by.
