Smooth Wall for home use ?

I seem to remember quite a while back downloading a smooth wall image [ I think it was smooth wall ] ISO to install on an old PC which meant I could control what site my kids visited at home. It was a firewall / gateway nix build - I installed this but could not get it to work correctly with my wireless switch / router

I want to have another crack at this but on looking around the smooth wall web site I can't find the diagram [ or site pages which had this info on ] - am I dreaming all this as i am sure there was something.... Can someone help ?

I want to get it working at home + I know a few more families that are looking at this type of solution....

You need an addon called Dansguardian.

 

Have a look at Endian as its got dansguardian (among many other things) built in

FWIW, express will be getting a spangly new release soon (next 4-5 months for beta)- hopefully with additional modules already added (eg. dg).

Does this mean that SW Express can be used as a free web filter? I haven't looked at SW Express - is the interface similar to Guardian?

 

This is what I need. I often go on the internet with my children at home and still come across unsuitable content.

@Overworked: it *can* if you are willing to invest some time. The interface is nowhere near Guardian level (its a 3rd party mod at present).

 

We did think at one time about offering a very cheap guardian sub on top of express, but it would take too much out of our core product line in terms of dev time, so that was indefinitely shelved. Personally, I hope we can do a "quick and dirty but totally free" version for home use.

 

Certainly express4 will be a closer relative to the commercial tackle than has been the case these last few years.

We use smoothwall express here with the advanced proxy and advanced URL filter addons installed. It works really well on an old machine we have. Filters all the curriculum traffic without any fuss.
