Force to install updates on shutdown or reboot

Hi,

 

I am after a way to force updates to be installed when I user either reboots or shutdown. Is this possible? Can you do it with a script or something?

 

I know you can schedule updates to install at certain times but sometimes the machines are not on at that time.

Why is this a problem FN-GM?

 

I use WSUS. If the machine isn't available at the update time (1pm daily here for WSUS), it simply applies the updates at the next shutdown by default.

I don't think so. If it's asleep though, Vista will wake the machine up at the time you've specified to apply updates, so that might be worth investigating.

You could schedule updates I suppose, maybe have a WOL script running at night and your WSUS schedule to run then?

i use shutdown.exe to manage the computers, will the group policy work with this?

This only makes the option available. It doesn't force it to be the only Shutdown option.

 

@FN-GM - I'd say your best bet would be to force deadlines for particular groups of computers. I think this would be your best bet. It can annoy some users however if they're forced to end their session for a machine to reboot.

Enable a restrictive Network Access Policy and tell him to deal with it Data Protection and what not

 

 

There's a script somewhere on wsus.info that forces a machine to install updates and then decides what to do after - I remember seeing it a year or so ago, haven't been able to find it since though. It was a very handy script - I believe it would even work across the network.
