witch Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Has anyone got either a long gel wrist/arm rest or a mouse gel pad going spare? One of our teachers really needs one here and has been told she can't have one. I don't see why she should pay for it herself so until I can persuade them I just wondered if anyone has got one. I will pay postage! On the same note she needs a proper computer chair and again has been refused -don't Health and Safety rules say she has to have one if she can show that she needs one? Where do I find info about it? Ta
SteveBentley Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 The chair is a definite. When I had my DSE training the general advice was that wrist rests aren't recommended because if you are resting your wrists while using the mouse/kb they're in the wrong position which causes strain. DSE Regs
beeswax Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 As someone who suffers from a prolapsed disc I can sympathise with the teacher. At a recent physio session I was talking to a lady in the same position as your teacher, i.e. they wouldn't buy her a proper computer chair. The physio turned round and said he'd sign her off for a month if they didn't comply. I believe it's been ordered now.
ninjabeaver Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I've got one of those Gel Wrist rests that go along the bottom of the keyboard if you still need it. 1
pete Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I find doing pressups helps much more than any gel wrist rest - ten or so per day is sufficient to keep any twinges away. Variety is good too - I use a nipplemouse*, trackball and conventional mouse so my wrist is in different positions. *xkcd - A Webcomic - Appropriate Term

And we haven't even been introduced! I don't think the teacher could do press-ups - anyway, I do quite a lot of press-ups and still get wrist pain. As for a variety of mice - having me on, presumably? Changing them would be a royal pain
pete Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 As for a variety of mice - having me on, presumably? Changing them would be a royal pain Nope, I use a thinkpad (trackpoint) with a trackball plugged into it. The other machine on my desk uses a conventional mouse.
