GPO not installing software

Hi all,

 

im having a problem installing software using group policy. We have a Suite of 23 computers and i have set IE7 to deploy through group policy. This has worked fine on about 5-6 machines, the rest everytime i switch on the computers, goes through the process of installing managed software Internet Explorer 7... and it works. But the next time i switch on the computers, it happens again. throught the same process. This is very annoying because its quite a lengthy process.

 

All of the machines have the same hardware, as far as im aware, they are all set up the same, they all have the same permissions, but there is something that must be different.

 

Any ideas???

When you logon to these machines, has IE7 (seemingly) been installed?

 

What does your application/system log report during the time IE7 was being installed?

If IE7 is installing everytime, then it's clearly failing to install (for whatever reason).

 

As an alternative using either IE7 or IE8, you could create a user account with admin rights and install IE7 or IE8, then reboot.

If you take a look at the application log with event viewer on the failing machines it will give you a pretty good idea as to why your installation is failing.

 

As an alternative, I think the best way to deploy IE7 is with WSUS rather than msi and group policy, it is much more reliable.

How are you deploying it, through MSI's or a startup script with silent switches? Could try doing a script to silently install it, like suggested above, but deploy it on computer startup on this suite of PCs.

 

Try gppupdate /force on each workstation? (or use specops to do the gpupdate?)

If it tires to install this wont be the problem.

 

As previously said the event log will throw some light upon this.

I would also try running RSOP to see whats going on and why it isnt installing.

Ahh wsus changes things as its not strictly a GP deployment, its a WSUS deployment. Out of interest does windows update work on those pc's?

If not try stopping the Automatic Updates service and removing a dir called "SoftwareDistribution" in c:\Windows then do a windows update to let it reinstall the agent.

The other possible is failure of WGA not thinking its a valid serial.

Are all your machines up to date with windows update, we had a problem with the conficker/downadup virus, it switches off the Automatic updates and BITS service on the local computer, try running a virus scan and have a look in the services to make sure both of these are running.
