I need advice on a Broadband supplier, I have Telewest but they do not cover the area in question. I need a supplier who will utilise the BT phone line. I have checked the latest offers, including BT themselves. I just need a basic connection nothing fancy. Around 1mb will do and uncapped preferred. It will be mainly to do emails and surfing with the odd download to start with until they get into the swing of things.

The Tiscali one for 12-99 month uncapped looks good but i would like your feedback /experiences with the various suppliers.

The ones I've looked at Here

Check out http://www.adslguide.org.uk - you can compare all the major ISPs and get pretty little graphs ;)

It's also worth noting that there are many that NAT your IP, don't provide (free) statis IP and block ports. Check all these things before signing on the line.

I use Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.co.uk) and they seem to do a decent survey plus I have a fixed IP, unblocked ports and no bandwidth limit.

Um - probably best to refer parents to the site Ric details rather than actually recommend them anything specific - you know who they will blame when it all goes base over apex!

But if you don't give them a specific, then you'll get blamed anyway! No-win situation.

I'm not impressed by Tiscali. They've recently been messing around with packet shaping, and have caused all sorts of problems. They also have a very restrictive fair usage policy - download too much between 6-11pm, and you'll find your connection becomes stupidly slow during those hours.

Not impressed with the quality of service at all.

Hearing bad things of Tiscali. Someone on Orange has an 090... number for support - ouch!

Nice graphs indeed Ric_! :)

With PlusNet personally, and find them very good - and I like to complain if things aren't perfect!:p Not the cheapest, and many others beating them on pice nowadays, but a good starting package would be 8mb restricted to 2gb for £14.99pm. Support is 0845 24hours or free if you're connected. Support forums are good/helpful - just the best points.
