Slow Network

Hi.

 

I'm using Windows 7 RC1 x64. I really like most of it, and a big change from running vista with a nearly full HDD (I upped the RAM to 3gb and HDD to 500GB before installing).

 

Anyway, the only real problem I have is trying to browse network shares. Specifically ones on our Windows Storage Server 2003r2 NAS server. Its also really slow on RDP as well. I don't have problems connecting to other servers, SMB or RDP; and other clients don't have any problem connecting to the NAS with either.

 

It is quite a strange problem and I wondered if anyone else had come across it, or had any ideas?

how are you connected to the network? Is the firewall on?

Got 32 bit installed on Virtual Box, had it with 1GB upped it to 1.5 and its running great. Alot better than Vista when I dabbled with it, still need to get used to new locations of where everything is. This weekend I plan to install it on a physical machine I have and also try the 64 bit edition. So far so good, seems to be quite fast as well.

Could it be due to the SMB2 protocol used by Windows 7 (and Vista)?

Thanks for the responses. I am connected with gigabit into a switch which is connected to the core. I have tried with Windows Firewall enabled and disabled whith no difference. The server does not have a firewall.

 

I did think about SMB2 causing problems, but it worked fine under Vista.

As defeatist as it is, have you tried it without the offline file & folder caching enabled? (made a huge speed difference in Vista)

Im running 7 x64 RC1 and am getting a similar problem with RDP.

 

All servers connect fine except one (the one i use the most, file storage) which max's my CPU and network.

 

At the moment Im using the XP VPC to remote to that server. Are you having similar strangeness with ur CPU/network usage when RDPing?

If you wanted to, you could rule out Auto-Negotiation on managed switches.

 

I suspect that me not having any speed issues whatsoever with Win7 is because most of our Admin PC's are all forced to 100mb/1gb FD at the Switch (HP) and client.
