Arcolite Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I'm trying to sort out VNCon to replace RMTutor when we remove RM from our network this summer. Now on most machines VNCon works perfectly, but on others I just can't ge tit to remote install. It will install the program, import the registry settings but will fail when it trys to start the service. Uninstalling then reinstalling doesn't solve it and neither does a restart. BUT, if I log into that same machine using Gencontrol (which also remote installs a VNC Client) everything works fine, Gencontrol deploys everything perfectly. The only thing i can think of is that is' my VNCon configuration/remote install setup. Anyone has any ideas how to solve this?

We're a Private Boys' School and aren't reliant on a ELA for our software items. One of the benifits of this also means that was have a larger than average IT budget. As a result, the ICT Department is 6 men strong, all of which from a corperate IT environment. We feel that RM offers us nothing over a pure Vanilla XP/Server 2003 system. Infact, we find it causes more problems than it solves. Dont get me wrong, for smaller sites and perhaps schools with lower requirements RM is great, but our school has out grown the need for it now.
webman Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 That's fair enough, each to their own and use what's best for the job Just some people seem to get rid of it for cost reasons or because they seem to have problems, that can usually be worked around fairly easily. We have been happily running a CC3 network since December 2002.
Geoff Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 When I used VNC I used FastPush to deploy it. http://www.darkage.co.uk/ These days I use remote desktop instead though. Making that work just requires some GPO settings.

We're in a similar position to yourselves - tried vncon for 6 months but it just wasn't reliable enough and doesn't appear to be being developed so have gone for the very low cost AB Tutor Control http://www.abconsulting.com which I can highly recommend - doubles as remote admin / classroom control too...
plexer Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I'm going over to AB Tutor for classroom control and now 95% of my machines are XP I could use remote desktop instead of vnc for remote tech or even AB for that as well. But at the moment I am unsing vnc and I also use fastpush to deploy it. Ben

We've got NetOp - and its forever having clients dropping out, or not working - which is getting to be a real drag! For remote tech - I find GenControl http://adminfoo.net/node/68 is a godsend - it automagically pushes VNC out to the client while you're using it and removes it afterwards - and its free.
