ajbritton Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I'm considering using these as backup devices in primary schools. What I want to know is how secure they are. Do they integrate with Windows security enough so that data is not accessible across the network without a domain level username and password? Also, if anyone is using them as backup devices, what software do you use to manage the backup sets?
bossman Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Just ordered 2 x Buffalo 2 terrabyte NAS servers having looked at the specs. They should do everything we want them to according to the info only drawback is the speed which is a mere 150Mbps transfer as i would have liked 300Mbps SATA 2 but one cannot grumble with the price of just over £1000 ready to go raid 5, integrate with windows Ldap no probs should have them within the next two weeks depending on delivery will post results also OK
Netman Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 The latest Terastation Pro model integrates with AD with a firmware upgrade apparantly. I have the old model and just set up accounts for access via it's web interface. Backup to it using Retrospect and Acronis Trueimage Server.

Geoff Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 We have one here. I believe the main server is using the USB2 connection to backup. My Linux boxes are using the ftp interface.
plexer Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I've also just put an order in for a 2TB version for remote backups not sure what software I'm going to run yet so open to suggestions. I've used BackupExec on my others servers and I've got some money in my budget for upgrades to the latest version but I've had so many issues with BE I'm considering something else. Ben
Face-Man Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I had problems with my tarastation as I could not implement the security as it took the first 100 user (alphabetically) out of ad and would not allow any others. I decided just to use it for backup but veritas keeps lossing the drive share. Now I have it workiing really well using robocopy command over night and have my userdata backed-up.

My worry is that a critical file gets deleted or corrupted but it's not spotted until the backup with the good version had been overwritten. My other worry about backing up to a Terrastation is that it does not give you an off-site backup. Anyone found an excuse for this or have a way around it? Maybe I should buy two Terrastations per site and alternate them being on/off-site!!
plexer Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Personally I wouldn't want to take school backup tapes home with me anyway so unless you are paying for proper offsite vaulting it's not an issue. At the moment we keep the tapes in a fireproof tape safe in a different location to the server so locating a terrastation elsewhere in the network in a secure location with it's own ups is no different for me. Otherwise get a terrastation for home and backup over your adsl? Ben

Maybe I should buy two Terrastations per site and alternate them being on/off-site!! Your first point is a bit of a concern to me but I rely on shadow copies for that type of thing. I know its not ideal in a total disaster scenario but for this environment of mine it is ok. Your second point: I personally use some external hard drives for my backup and take one home on monday. These drives are connected through a SATA back plate. I am getting away with one disk for backups at the moment but a rethink will be in order soon probably.
