RIS and SATA drives.

I have introduced RIS here around 6 months ago and it all works very well for us. My question is.....we are about to take delivery of 20 new pc's and the have SATA hard drives. All our curent pc's have IDE. IS there anything differnet about RISing a SATA compared to IDE.

 

Id there anything i should know or be aware of?

Its the usual case of if windows doesnt support the sata chipset then it wont see the drives. Normally during a normal setup you would press F6 and supply it with a floppy. With RIS your going to have to make this all automated by adding the relevant files and adding the entries to the mass storage drivers section. Where that is exactly escapes me at the moment

General Guidelines on RIS Risetup (Flat) images

 

Note 1: For riprep images, add updates to the corresponding RIS Risetup (flat) Image

 

 

1. Make sure to either install hotfix KB823658 (also available for Windows 2000) or install Windows Server 2003 SP1.

 

Note: This solves an issue where RIS does not recognize the syntax of the [Manufacturer] section of the .inf file for the Nic driver.

 

2. At the same level as the i386 folder of the RIS image, create a $OEM$\$1\Drivers\Nic folder structure

 

Example: RemoteInstall\Setup\Eng\Images\Windows_XP_SP2\$OEM$\$1\Drivers\Nic

 

3. Copy all the updated driver files to the $oem$\$1\Drivers\Nic folder (see listing below)

 

4. Copy the updated *.sys driver file to the i386 folder (see listing below)

 

5. Add the following to the ristndrd.sif file

 

[unattended]

OemPreinstall = Yes

OemPnpDriversPath = \Drivers\Nic

 

6. Delete all .PNF files from the i386 folder (or just delete the corresponding .PNF file if you know which one. They will be rebuilt if missing)

 

7. Restart the Remote Installation Service (BINLSVC)

 

Note: The first time you boot a RIS Client it will take some additional time because the RIS Server rebuilds the deleted PNF file(s).

Detail instructions for Intel Pro 100

(found on HP D510 SFF)

 

1. copy the following files to the i386 folder

2. Copy the following files to the $oem$\$1\Drivers\Nic folder

You can always enable IDE emulation in the BIOS for awkward ones

 

They are usually fine though - used HP dc7100 and several Dell models.

I have a problem that is similar to yours. I created an image of a Thinkpad laptop that has a SATA drive hanging off a ICH7 chipset.

 

I thought the issue of downloading the image using ris would be OK once i got it to start (see my last post in the ris how do you do...it) but i was wrong. When sata is set to compatible in the BIOS it downloads the image but it fails to reboot.

 

I have tried to add the drivers in to the mass storage drivers section in the ris sif but the machine fails to load th drivers for the sata. It brings up the error, there is a unexpected error (21) at line 21. I have looked at the instructions both in the driver download (which incidently is the intel storage manager) and on the microsoft website.

 

I still get the same error however.

Daft question I know but have you tried testing the drivers you're using in the RIS as part of a normal install using F6 to supply the driver?

 

Probably something you've checked but figured it's worth dropping in there.

I use GX620s and a few older SX260s and they RIS fine to SATA from the disk image with no modifications whatsoever.

If i recall correctly you should get asked to press f6 at the point where the screen goes blue and just before it starts downloading stuff. I haven't used SCSI drives for ages and have never needed to use external drivers for sata drives. But if this is correct then i don't get asked for f6??

 

Could it be the intel drivers?

 

in the manual for the laptop it is strange as it says to set the sata controller to compatible first then install windows.

 

Once installed reset the sata controller back to ahci and then when windows starts it will find new hardware and then you install the intel drivers. If this is the case have i not just done that when ris'ing in the first place?
