Does anyone know if this can be modified so that new users aren't Firstname+surname?

yeah it can be, you can have anything as a username, when we create a batch of users we bang them all in an excel doc and use formulas to create usernames. Like first 6 letters of the surname then the first 2 of the first name etc...

For anonymity and for the easiest system ever - we use the Admission number from our school MIS (SIMS) this way 7821 is equal to Joe Bloggs. I have a semi automatic way of creating users in AD by using the numbers then populating the firstname lastname and office fields.

 

Since the admission number is unique per student - it works out easy really -plus they are consecutive (sp?) so its easy to script up creating 1000 folders.

We have these magical storage devices called books. haha... sorry but seriously on day one the kids receive a home college contact book (think diary) there is a section in there for Username and email address for them to write it down.... plus the username never changes so after 5 or 6 years they tend to remember it.

 

I think I might like to look towards some sort of year of entry identification too though, might just put them in year entry OU's though.

I try to get ours to do that in their planners, but guess what.....

At my place we used to use admission numbers, however given that the scroggs can't remember what there password is from one day to another and even when you reset it to '012346' they ask you to right it down, we stuck to First initial, surname followed by year of admission, such as 'JBloggs07'

I would have it as:

All staff are first inital of first name followed by username without the commence year on the end and students the same but with the year on the end.

my old high teachers hand it like this:

 

surname first initial eg: bloggsJ

 

Sudents:

 

have a number eg: 20008

 

each year has there own begging bit

 

This year is this

10 > year 7

20 > year 11

30 > year 10

40 > year 9

50 > year 8

 

Next year is

 

10> Year 8

20> Year 7

30> Year 11

40> Year 10

50> Year 9

 

So when the new years 7s come they get year 11's old number

We find it much simpler as the admins to just use First initial, surname followed by year of admission, such as 'JBloggs07'.

 

So for our sixth form who started in the year 2000, it's JBloggs00, those who started in 1999, it's jbloggs99, that way each name is unique.

Yeah Witch, i get what you mean, you can walking down the corridor and three students/teachers/management/ofsted inspector come up to you and say "Sir (Miss in your case, i think!), whats me password" and even worse, "What's me user name". Scary or what!

As you have posted in LNM forum, I guess you are asking about the options for username creation in LNM. Off the top of my head, I think there are three: alias (first name and initial of surname), firstname surname, and another I can't remember (I'm at home at the moment). Do you have the LNM User Manual? Look at the section about the Provisioning Wizard, the tool for importing users in bulk. If you need any further help, or don't have the manual, can you post again here? I'm not in work again until Monday now, but I should be able to give you full info then if you need it.

Problem is if you want to translate the username into an email address, you're breaking security guidelines by using part of the kids name.

 

I want to use exam numbers, that and combined centre number might do for us, or some method of defining the year group - like their final year - class of XX for example...

Thinking back, it's the staff that have their names as firstname.surname and the kids have there own MIS number (me thinks) on there account, however there names do appear within the directory if they were to search for pal etc

3 triplets! blimey!

 

We're in Wales - so Jones and Davies are everywhere - that system wouldn't work coz we have more than a few david jones' for example - what do you do then??
