Decent home router (adsl 2 + gigabit + wireless n)

Ive done the usual searching but my google-fu must be pretty low at the moment.

 

Can anyone reccomend me a decent router for home with the above features + maybe some other bits like QOS etc that doesnt cost the earth and actually works without have to constantly reset the thing.

 

Cheap as possible but willing to splash out is something is the dogs..

 

 

Also if someone could clarify for me... if I had a wireless n router which could work around 200mbps and say 3 wireless laptops which were 802.1 g would this mean they could all connect at there potential maximum of 54mbps or would they still have to contest 54 mbps between them?

Your best option for stability and features is probably seporate units as these do their individual jobs really well rather than doing all jobs 'good enough'. With wireless N you will only get the aditional speed and bandwidth if your hardware is all N, if it is G it is still contesting the 54mbits avalible.

Cheers for that....problem is I dont think GF will be happy to have an extra bit of kit under the telly. So an all in one is really what im after just for aesthetics.

 

Thats interesting about contesting the 54 though as Im sure a saleman was trying to tell me the other day that upradeing to n would increase our wireless speeds even for older clients!

I have got the Netgear DG834PN and dont have any problems with this unit at all. I have also a few mates with this router and they too dont have any problems.

The DrayTek 2820N would meet all of your requirements but costs around £185 -only one of the ports is gigabit though Edited April 22, 2009 by Jamman960

You don't want a lot do you? If you compromise a bit you could go for something like Cisco 1801 Integrated Services Router - Cisco Systems

I have been throught several different N routers all at the top end £100+ and found them all to be rubbish!

 

Save your self a stressfull time and wait untill N is better supported and ratified.

 

I found that my Linksys N MIMO Dual band was reasonably fast, 6Mb ish throughput but restarted itself every 15 mins and had the worst range ever!

Next the Netgear had a stable connection but had poor range and very very poor throughput 1Mbps.

 

So after messing with a few more I decided to go back to my original Linksys WRT54G wich even now outperforms N in speed, range and reliability.

i paid a bit extra my last router and got a netgear rangemax one, i must say ive found it amazing so far ive had it a few months now, the wireless coverage is brilliant aswell.

I have got the Netgear DG834PN and dont have any problems with this unit at all. I have also a few mates with this router and they too dont have any problems.

 

I have a DG834PN too and can't fault it. I don't use it anymore as i now have a DG834N. The DG834PN only runs at a max of 108Mbps wireless where as the DG834N uses 802.11n and runs at 270Mbps.

 

I bought my DG834N when it was just released and found it to be terrible at the extra wireless speed and range. I just couldn't get it to keep a solid wireless connection and I found that using the G 54Mbps was much better! The router was using the latest firmware too! I RMA'ed the router in the off chance it was faulty. New router - same results! A few months later I checked Netgear's site for a firmware upgrade and there was new one. Popped that on the router and now it's superb! I have updated the firmware again since this and I've had no problems what so ever!

 

Only down side is, it does not have gigabit ports however the WNR854T comes with them... but no ADSL modem! I can't really comment on the ADSL modem as i haven't use it much (because it doesn't support VPN to a DG834) but when i did use it, It worked perfectly fine.

 

When i bought my DG834N it was about £150 from eBuyer. Since then, i'm sure a black version has been released (mine is white) and I think it has gigabit ports.

 

Just to confirm... To get the extra speed, you must upgrade your wireless card to an N compatible NIC. N compatible NIC's have an extra antenna - 3 in total compaired to the old 2 areialed G ones.

Buy an airport extreme from apple which is about £140 I think and then purchase your own ADSL2+ modem seperately

Which should have one RJ11 connector and one RJ45 connector to go into the WAN port of the air port extreme.

 

If you need more then 3 gigabit ports then you can always get a gigabit switch like the 5 or 8 port netgear or linksys gigabit switch.
