I've got one and no matter what Hard Disk I put in it it gets as far as Inspecting Hardware Configuration when installing XP then goes to a black screen. I've tried fdisk /mbr and a full fdisk but still the same Any ideas?

karldenton Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Yeah they meet minimum spec for XP, got 512mb Ram. Semperon processor. The motherboard is PCChips M848A Rev 2.1. Guess it needs a bios update but can only find the Rev5 on their site so don't want to mess it up with that.

PC Chips can be ok, it depends what chipset they use. Back in the days of the mighty K6-2, my via based Gigabyte motherboard was not altogether that good, USB was really unstable. My friend had the same system except that he had a PC Chips board with an SiS chipset and that was much better. So there In response to the original poster, I'd probably do a zero fill on the hard disk and run a memory test for starters. I'd also check the board (and power supply) for blown caps, they can cause all sorts of weirdness. Also, go into your BIOS, there may be an option, probably under plug and play or something, to "Reset Configuration Data". Select "Enable". Probably won't make any difference for XP but it has fixed similar problems for me in the past. Edited April 16, 2009 by Batman
karldenton Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Thanks will try a memory test. Thinking its the motherboard. Put XP on a hard disk then tried that and gets to loading XP screen and freezes.
