Why are my users seeing the Windows Update icon?

Where am I going wrong in these settings that is allowing users to see the icon and have the option to install the updates now?

Does it matter? if the shield icon is there and someone clicks it then they can install the updates but they're only going to get the updates that you've allowed - they can't start installing random packages!

well in the grand scheme of things, no. But then I have users telling me they see some balloon telling them they need to install updates, what does that mean? "I clicked on it and my computer restarted and I never saved my work". etc etc etc etc etc

The clue stick is a useful educational tool that needn't always be self-administered... You can thwap others with it occasionally too you know

CEO, CSO, CIO, etc don't have the time to read an informative email telling them about that little yellow shield near their clock. Nor want to sit and listen to me explain it.

 

My job is to make their lives easier and simple when it comes to computing, not load them up with information they are going to forget 10 minutes later.

I agree; I'm just asking questions in the pursuit of knowledge :-)

 

Sometimes, I think it's good for users to see the shield - if they're running Windows at home then they ought to see it and deal with it so seeing the same stuff at work shouldn't be off putting.

 

Sadly, I know that it's not always that easy ...

IME "the little yellow shield" is a familiar thing for my users and is way easier to explain/understand than "I'll be deploying $foo patch on $date". Familiar visual clues > * for getting info across.
