Daily Announcements in Web Browser

In school - we have a morning meeting where staff get handed a sheet full of the announcements other teachers want to make to the pupils. This is an amazing waste of paper.

 

I have been asked to find a piece of web based software where people can post their announcements, set the year group and then store that announcement with the date somewhere. Then when the form tutor checks the announcement webpage it shows the daily announcements for that year group.

 

So naturally I thought of a database backend with a website form to post items to the database and then a different web page to query the database for that days announcements - with the option of checking forthcoming announcements.

 

Does anyone have anything like this I could use? Maybe I could move to write it myself, but whilst I could develop the database in Access I'm not sure I could do it on MySQL.

 

Can anyone suggest something?

You can still use an access database just not for a really large implementation. If you are using a windows server to host it have a look at Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition which can help you throw together an asp.net site without a single line of codeing. It even comes with SQL Express incase you want to make the leap and it is free.

Our sharepoint intranet/extranet is set to automatically run when staff logon. The staff just click the year group of the class they have in P1 (as we don't have discrete AM registration sessions) which takes them to a filtered view of the daily message board list.

That sounds about right - I was going to attemt something today along those lines. As an experiement using an Access database to setup the backend.

 

I might get out a MySQL/PHP book which I purchased the other year to see if I can do it that way.

 

Then to start - 5 buttons one for Year 7, 8 ,9 ,10, 11 - once they click on that button it runs the query with the date (Date= AND Year=) - it then returns the output in a reprort (for now).

 

Then using the Web Development tool suggested above I might try a front end.

 

Then again the EDF Semi Final is on all afternoon so maybe a trip to the pub would be a better option LOL.

If you are a SIMS user this is a standard feature for teachers and in widespread use - not in a browser though.

We were told it couldn't be done by our LEA.

 

What aspect of SIMS does this? I'm not the school SIMS officer - and do not do much with the admin network side. If you could let me know that would be excellent.

I have developed a web based messaging server. The system does:

1/Weekly bulletin

2/Daily messages

3/Teacher messages

4/Calendar

5/ICT bug reporting

6/Resource booking

7/Installs on Windows with no set up.

All web based including admin.
