Seems there are a fair number of two-wheel experts on the forum, so perhaps you can advise. When I retire in a year or so (depending on the economic situation) we won't want to run two cars so I thought about getting a little scooter to run around on. A 125cc would be fine. Something with good stowage for the shopping and a helmet. I've looked at some of these Chinese imports but that might be false economy. Any recommedations?

The Piaggio's seem favourite in and around London.

Have you thought about getting a proper bike rather than a scooter. You could have a top box for storage, maybe even panniers.

Gilera runner there a more grown up version of the scooters and have ample storage. Safe too, at least I was in a side on with a van and didn't hurt one bit.

They look like a snake thats eaten a goat mind but the look grows on you...

If you downgrade to a 50cc (for whatever reason), I know it will still cruise along at 55ish.

This is my bike. Brand new it cost just over £1000, and yes, it's chinese. It's cheaply built but keep tightning the bolts and it's well worth the money.

It would give me a bit of cred. with the kids if I rolled up the drive on one of those. It looks a bit heavy? I'll talk to you againg in a couple of years when it has gone for an MOT :)

It's not at all heavy, I'm a 8stone weakling... well, I was, now I'm an 11 stone weakling, but you get the idea.

I can pick it up, not that I'VE dropped it, which is a long and not really interesting story!

Myself i would recommend passing your test if not done so already and get yourself a proper bike.

I ride a VFR750 to work and back every day in rain and sun and to be honest I dont really get all that wet. Not much storage on it mind without panniers and top box. Used to ride a moped two and from work and to be honest the only difference is that i felt more vunerable on the road as cars seem to think because your on a moped its ok to cut you up and overtake at stupid points.
