Michael Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I don't see why not, but of course I suspect BGFL want you to use the existing VLE solution they provide. I also expect they won't support you whatsoever with maintenance or other technical issues which you may or may not run into. The other importance with Moodle is to keep it updated and very well secured, as I have heard numerous schools having their websites hacked or changed.

apoth0r Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Host moodle yourselves! Buy a semi decent box to stick it on and get ur isp to route what u need. You then have almost full control over it, no bloomin cock ups at the lea end! We've got ours running on a Sun box, works a treat, great performance and doesn't throttle the internet when used in school as its redirected locally.

You have to request a reverse proxy from Link2ICT, but only takes a couple of days to sort out (which is quicker than waiting for them to host it for you!) I understand that Link2ICT are developing a secondary school moodle template to replace their netmedia mydesktop solution, but I'm not sure about timescales (or whether they will adhere to them). Place your interest with their service desk.
Michael Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I agree that with the growing popularity of VLEs, it makes great sense to host it inside school because speed and accessibility should never be an issue. Providing your Curriculum server isn't overloaded, I see no reason why you cannot host Moodle there.
alan-d Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 We host our own moodle but could well make use of the BGFL one as well when/if it becomes available, probably as a peer site. I would assume that if they are using moodle that they now support Php sites.

swintle Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 We host moodle for our course creation, and Joomla as our front end. Pupils/staff have OWA (again hosted on Exchange) and I have a great little ASP script that allows access to pupils/staff to home dirs... to allow downloading and uploading from across the net. Moodle uptake is really growing, thanks to our SLT and various other teaching staff really seeing the benefits, we have a VLE Co-ordinator (a maths teacher) who is leading the training for Moodle. I personally think if you have internal support, then go for your own internal solution, when the net has been playing up for us we are still able to send email and access our moodle courses. Setting up Moodle is fairly straight forward ( I have some notes if your interested) as long as you have a forward facing IP and have sorted out your domain name then you are already halfway there. I can see the benfits of capitas leraning gateway, but for me its too pricey and slow, my sons school use it and its never working properly..
stevenlong1985 Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 Hello Righto I've comeback from the Link2ICT event today in a nutshell Link2ICT will be supporting it, so any problems give them a call Link2ICT are going to be offering moodle to all schools i.e. offering Basic templates / Hosting etc, and training. BECTA didnt approve of moodle on their website due to of no outside support but with link2ict supporting it, its a green light Link2ICT have had a primary school to pilot moodle and here it is: Little Sutton Primary To get involved you have to log a call with Link2ICT expressing interest in moodle for your school btw im not 100% sure, But the money for the support comes out of the Harnessing technology Grant which apparently we dont see anyhow, so it shouldn't effect any of your budget. Oh yeh and they well supporting moodle but one verson down just because risk of any bugs in the newer builds. Steve

It would be nice if an e-mail alternative could also be introduced, otherwise it's pointless (in my opinion) moving or offering schools Moodle. It's just another system to update and maintain etc... Schools then have a real choice of moving away from Netmedia altogether.
