As my computer book collection is getting out of date as not brought much in past few years want to update it so any suggestions of must have books or CD's

I have a nice book from Microsoft Press called 'Visual Basic .NET Deluxe Learning Edition' which comes with the standard edition of VB .NET at a rather reasonable price.

 

You are, however, a programming guru so this will be of no use.

 

I tend to use websites when I want to know stuff so...

Microsoft press 'Windows Command-Line Administrators Pocket Consultant'. Fantastic guide and has saved my bacon a couple of times.

@ric lol not quite my vb.net skills not brill as i never bothered to learn it after using vb 6 for years... is this 2003 version?? as this might be way to go with project but anyway..

 

Yes i agree over websites hence why i have not updated my collection in while but nothing better having book can read then refer to...

Looking at the PC Pro thread concerning not using Open Source software in Education I was just wondering what other IT magazines/publications others read or subscribed to?

 

Also in your opinion would you re subscribe ?

I subscribe to Linux Journal and thats about it. Most of my reading is done online these days (news sites, blogs, etc). Printed Computer magazines are going the way of the Dodo.

 

As to the original question, I've recently bought a few O'Reilly books. Namely:

 

Greasemonkey Hacks

Learning Python

Linux Server Security, Third Edition.

Using Samba, Second Edition.

agree with geoff lot of content comes from online sources these days

 

I do like pirnt version of wired this magazine i kept thinking of canceling my subscription but everytime i think about i find something useful in it.

I did like the time I spent subscribe to winscriptingsolutions ... both the website and the paper mag.

 

I do get a few of the more interesting "trade" pulp, the usual stuff you get after registering for them at InfoSec when you hope to win the latest sets of gadgets and gizmos.

 

IT Week and Computing stay on my desk for one day. If I don't read them immedtiatley then I won't read them. On day 2 they go into the Library and are occasionally looked at by interested VIth formers or students doing coursework in other years.

key to getting free mag is fill form in but be creative with it as more it industry you ook on the form the better so when it aks how many users you support put total number staff+kids... stuff like that..

safari.oreilly.com - an online library containing many if not all of O'Reilly's pubs, and books by several other publishers. They have various subscription levels from $10 - $35 per month depending on the number of books you want to have on your shelf at one time, and whether you want to be able to download chapters.

Safari is pretty good fun. If you want to get hold of content from it without shelling out just go to books.google.com and search for the relevant title. You can then navigate the book by searching for chapter titles.

Since they won't pay for training, I have to train myself on Windows 2003 and XP Pro. So far I have bought:

Windows server 2003 Inside Out - William R Stanek

Windows server 2003 Administrators Pocket Consultant - William R Stanek

Windows server 2003 Insider Solutions - Rand Morimoto et al

 

I am thinking about the resource pack and I will have to scour Microscrewem's web pages aswell to hone my skills!!

 

I know NT4 and Windows 2000 fairly well so I hope I have enough to get the ball rolling.

why not stick to NT4 and 2000 or insist you get the MCP training?

 

If the school has decided to take the XP/2003 route then they must realise that training is a part of the cost.
