VNC, Remote Desktop, etc thread

2 quick things here...

 

1) would remote desktop not be better suited for XP machines than VNC ? For fixing this is.

 

2) If for spying and not fixing then I may still be able to remove the icon from the taskbar in vnc (this used to be hardcoded, but not sure if they have an option for this now) If anyone wants this, lemmi know.

The problem with Remote Desktop is that you cannot watch what someone else is doing with it. I find that if I can sit and watch what the other person is doing over VNC, I can get a better idea of the problem. Remote Desktop insists on logging off any users before logging into a workstation.

 

As for removing the desktop tray icon from VNC, it's a simple Registry hack if you are using TightVNC (just started using it in place of RealVNC...).

Add a new DWORD value called DisableTrayIcon & give it the value of 1 to remove the icon.

Well, as I said, I would use VNC myself if I had to watch anything :-)

 

When I said about the icon removal I was on about standard "VNC" but if tight VNC does it by a simple reg hack then so much the better....does it have all the functinality of VNC?

 

Also does anyone know of any software (free preferably) that will split screen into multiple vnc sessions so I could view say a whole rooms worth of computers on the screen at once. I've never found one, and never really looked all that hard for one either, but I do know that a techie at my old college when my bro was there (about 2 years ago) wrote a program himself to do just this.

You can search for machines, remotely install vnc invisibly on the fly, set it to view up to 16 screens at once, and set the timing to switch between them, etc...

 

You can save lists of machines - I set up a room of machines for staff who can then monitor kids from the pre-made list. Works well.
